Alpine Meadows Hosts Easter Celebrations with Egg Hunts and Seventh Annual Beacon and Eggs Search Contest

[Alpine Meadows, Calif.] March 27, 2013- This Sunday, Alpine Meadows will host Easter celebrations galore. Easter means it is hunting season at Alpine Meadows and there’s a hunt for just about anyone, both for the young and young at heart, with the All-Mountain Easter Egg Hunt, the Kids’ Egg Hunt or the Annual Beacon & Eggs Search Contest.

All-Mountain Easter Egg Hunt & Kids’ Easter Egg Hunt at Alpine Meadows
Make room in that Easter basket to fit a season pass to Alpine Meadows. Guests will have a chance to comb the mountain for a golden egg containing a Bronze Season Pass during the free, All-Mountain Adult Easter Egg Hunt. Hundreds of eggs will be hidden across all of Alpine’s 2400 acres, but only one will be gold. Arrive early, as this all-day hunt will commence when the lifts start moving at 9 a.m. All clues will be given out through Alpine’s Twitter account @skialpine.

Ski school will host another annual favorite, the Children’s Easter Egg Hunt. There will be plenty of Easter candy for all. Children 7 and under can join the hunt that takes place this Sunday, March 31, at 10:15 a.m. at the Kids Camp Magic Carpet. For Children ages 8 -13, the egg hunt takes place at 10:15 a.m. at the Magic Carpet located off the Subway Chair. Visit www.Skialpine.com for more information.

Annual Beacon & Eggs Beacon Search Contest
Combine an Easter egg hunt with an avalanche beacon search practice session, and the result is the seventh annual Beacon and Eggs beacon search contest at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. This event is organized by Alpine’s ski patrol and takes place on Easter Sunday, March 31. Not only is it a fun, free* event for all ages, but it also raises avalanche awareness and is a great opportunity to practice search and rescue techniques.
Avalanche beacons are buried in a one-acre area at Alpine Meadows and competitors proceed to the buried treasure using their beacons in “search” mode. Competitors work individually or in teams (up to four people) to recover the beacons. Competitors redeem a found beacon for incredible prizes from generous sponsors like Black Diamond, Vans, The Sports Exchange, K2, Cosmo’s Custom Footwerks, Oakley, Mountain Hardware, Alpenglow and The Backcountry, among others.

“This is a great opportunity for skiers and riders to practice their search and rescue technique and win great prizes while doing it” said Ken Bokeland of Alpine Meadows Ski Patrol. “It’s a fun event that really helps people to hone some important skills.”

Free registration is at the Beacon & Eggs tent near the top of Subway Chair Lift (next to the base lodge) from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Le Mans-style start is at noon near the top of the Subway beginner lift, adjacent to the base lodge. Competitors must provide their own beacons, probes, and shovels. For additional information and details, call the Alpine Meadows patrol office at 530-581-8238 or visit www.SkiAlpine.com.

[Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, Calif.] March 26, 2013 - Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have joined with the Tahoe Fund and the Truckee River Watershed Council to help launch the new Green Bucks program. Green Bucks is a dollar donation program designed to harness the passion of visitors and residents in order to help care for the region’s extraordinary environment. Squaw and other local businesses have committed to collecting dollar donations on room nights, season passes, lift tickets, golf rounds and other items to help improve the area’s natural environment.

“In conjunction with our company's commitment to the environment, we have made two $25,000 donations to both the Truckee River Watershed Council and the Tahoe Fund, and we are asking guests to contribute one dollar on the purchase of lodging reservations or a season pass via the new Green Bucks program,” said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.

Proceeds from Green Bucks support the Tahoe Fund, the Truckee River Watershed Council and other public and nonprofit organizations in the region. These organizations fund projects that will improve, enhance and restore watersheds, hiking and biking trails, and environmental stewardship programs.

"The organizations receiving the proceeds from the Green Bucks program are outstanding and impactful organizations, and the funds from this program will go directly to help preserve and restore the rivers, lakes and meadows in the region," continued Wirth. "It's our hope that our company's broad participation compels and induces other companies in the region to support the Tahoe Fund and the Truckee River Watershed Council through this new program."

Green Bucks will support:
Miles of hiking, biking and ADA-accessible trails
Access for swimming, kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddle boarding
Open spaces for wildlife habitat and scenic views
Restoration of rivers, lakes, meadows, wetlands, forests
Protection of fish and wildlife habitat
Boating and fishing access
Landscaping and trail re-alignment to prevent runoff
Signage and interpretive displays to guide visitors
Monitoring of water quality
“We are really excited about the Green Bucks program as it is one of the first programs to reach from Lake Tahoe all the way down the Truckee River,” said Lisa Wallace, Executive Director of the Truckee River Watershed Council. “We are thankful to have Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows as founding members, and for their help in leading the effort to actually develop the Green Bucks program and to secure broad participation from the business community. We hope to see many other businesses join in as well."

Green Bucks is a win-win for residents and visitors by creating a simple way for those who love the Lake Tahoe/Truckee area to help make it even better. With the support of visitors, residents and local business, Green Bucks will help raise money to restore and improve the environment and enhance recreational opportunities, ultimately helping to drive even more tourism and business to the local economy.

“We’d like to thank Squaw Valley for their early support of the Green Bucks program,” said Amy Berry, CEO of the Tahoe Fund. “The program is a great and easy way for businesses to offer their customers a way to give back when they are here enjoying our incredible natural environment.”

Similar “buck” programs are operating in places like Jackson Hole, Yosemite and regions similar to our own with exciting results. These programs have raised millions of dollars to support local initiatives. Local businesses can call (530) 550-8760 ext. 7 to sign up to participate in the Green Bucks program.

Alpine Meadows’ Spring Music Series Kicks Off Spring Fun at Alpine
Alpine Meadows Celebrates Spring with a Stellar Lineup for the Spring Music Series

[Alpine Meadows, Calif.] March 20, 2013 –Alpine Meadows’ Spring Music Series presents an energetic lineup of live music every weekend through April. There’s no better way to start a spring day than to follow the sun and enjoy Alpine’s world class corn snow and finish the day off with a cold beverage while soaking up the sun on the Sun Deck listening to live music. Here is a complete lineup of music for the Spring Music Series:

March 23: SambaDa
Founded in Santa Cruz, the phenomenon known as SambaDá combine bloco afro (Afro-Brazilian percussion music), samba-reggae, surf-rock and California funk into an irresistible stew. This smoldering assemblage of Brazilian and American musicians brings a rollicking samba party with a funky twist.

March 30: Good Gravy
These five members of the band have become virtual masters of using bluegrass instrumentation, along with percussion, to push their bluegrass roots to new musical horizons, creating an innovative mix of bluegrass, funk, rock and psychedelic dance beats complete with imaginative improvisational jams and intricate compositions.

April 6: Music by Jurts
As part of the Red Bull Schlittentag after party there will be music by Jurtz out on the Sundeck.

April 7: Tracorum
Tracorum is an original rock’n'soul/rhythm’n'blues band from San Francisco.

April 13: Peter Joseph Burtt & The King Tide
Peter Joseph Burtt, a lifelong drummer, draws from many sources to inform his music and chronicles the years he spent living and studying with master musicians of Africa.

April 14: Joy and Madness (formerly The Nibblers)
Joy and Madness is a band of soul brothers, pulled together from the ashes of The Nibblers, a Sacramento based funk and soul phenomenon that quickly rose to prominence in the Nor Cal area and beyond.

April 20: Silver Boombox Thief
Silver Boombox Thief will be performing for the Trains after party on the Sundeck. Silver Boombox Thief is a DJ who has been turning house parties into concerts for a really long time.

April 21: The Casual Dogs
The Casual Dogs have been a Grateful Dead Tribute band based out of the Lake Tahoe/Reno area. They will have special guest Dan Parslow on lead guitar.

April 27: The Grease Traps
The Grease Traps specialize in hard-driving funk, instrumental soul, classic breakbeats and rare grooves.

April 28: Huckle
This Northern California-based singer-songwriter-guitarist is always ready to dig his itchy toes into fresh soil, hips swinging as he projects outwards into the world. One picks up on some of the blessed West Coast vibe of Jack Johnson and the oceanic oomph of John Butler in his readily appealing music, but there’s also a winning attack to his sound, a hunger felt in the gut of the listener.

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] March 20, 2013 – World champion skiers are descending up Squaw Valley this week for the 2013 Nature Valley U.S. Championships. A Sierra snowstorm has postponed Wednesday’s race and the Championships will move forward with a revised schedule with races every day Thursday through Sunday this week. The most up-to-date revised shedule is below.

Thursday, March 21: Women's Giant Slalom (8:45 a.m. & 10:30 a.m.) / Men's Giant Slalom (1 p.m. & 2:30 p.m.)
Friday, March 22: Ladies' Super G (9 a.m.) / Men's Super G (1 p.m.)
Saturday, March 23: Men's Slalom (9 a.m. & 12 p.m.)
Sunday, March 24: Ladies' Slalom (9 a.m. & 12 p.m.)

World Championship gold medalists Ted Ligety and Mikaela Shiffrin will be at Squaw Valley this week for the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships, as will be hometown Olympic gold winner and record setting major championship medalist Julia Mancuso. Mancuso cut her teeth with the Squaw Valley Ski Team, has eight Olympic and World Championship medals and a record 15 U.S. Championships – a number she will be gunning to boost this week in Squaw.

Over 500 top racers from U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) programs will descend on the legendary 1960 Olympic host mountain this week for the annual championships. Click here for a full list of athlete bios.
Also racing on home turf at Squaw Valley are U.S. Ski Team athletes Travis Ganong, Bryce Bennett, Nick Daniels, Foreste Peterson and Keith Moffat. California’s own double World Cup downhill podium finisher Stacey Cook and Mark Engel will also be competing.

Squaw Valley is proud to announce that the ski resort has worked with Carbon Lighthouse to make the U.S. Alpine Championships a carbon neutral event for the first time in history. Squaw Valley estimated the event’s footprint and enlisted Carbon Lighthouse to purchase carbon allowances on the California carbon exchange in June to offset the impact from the event which will represent 273 tons of CO2 in total generated by car travel for spectators, air travel for athletes and coaches, mountain operations including grooming, snowmaking and chairlift operations, and hotels and events.

“We are committed to being responsible environmental stewards as this mountain and our environment are absolutely central to the Squaw Valley experience. Consequently, we are very concerned about the impact that climate change could have on our community and business,” said Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley’s president and CEO. “We hope that by undergoing this effort, we will encourage guests and members of the community to evaluate their own impact on the environment and advocate for addressing climate change at a regional, national, and global level.”

Quotes from U.S. Ski Team athletes on the U.S. Alpine Championships at Squaw:

Julia Mancuso

I’m really excited to have Nationals at Squaw Valley. It’s an awesome place. I grew up training there on the run that’s now Julia’s Gold, so that’s very exciting and I really look forward to it.

I’ve raced on the race hill in Squaw a few times, but it’s U.S. Nationals. My team is fast so I have to try to do my best so I can get some more national titles.

Squaw Valley is an incredible place full of Champions and growing up there just made me inspired to be the best skier I could possibly be. I didn’t even know if it would be racing. I looked at people like Shane McConkey and on the race side Tamara McKinney. I had these aspirations of just having fun and skiing and playing outside. At Squaw Valley, that’s what it’s all about, just getting out on the mountain and having fun and expressing yourself in whatever way you want.

I’m racing two races at Nationals at Squaw so I’m hoping to bring in two more national titles to add to my 15. I love racing Nationals. It’s springtime. It’s the end of the year and I have a lot of fun, especially with it being at home.

Marco Sullivan (Note: Marco Sullivan will not be competing due to a recent injury.)

The best part about having the Champs at Squaw is going to be skiing around with all these people that I travel with all year. We ski around a lot of cool ski areas but next week I’ll finally bring them to my home area and get to show them the ropes. We’ll go do some good freeskiing and hopefully have some good racing in the middle and just show off what we have with all these folks from the U.S.

My first national title was actually at Squaw in 2002 so I have good memories from that hill. It’s really not too difficult of a track, pretty straightforward; you’ve just got to make some nice turns. There’s a couple little secret spots but I’m going to keep those to myself.

Squaw is just a good family of people, lots of families that are into racing that live around the area. It’s a little bit cutoff from the other parts of the U.S. that are always racing against each other. The East Coast has a big community and Colorado/Utah too. We kind of get shut out sometimes in the west, but growing up there you just build around that centralized family that you have in Tahoe. Everyone comes out of there just having fun and skiing well. When you get up onto the national stage you realize that we really have a good thing going.

Travis Ganong

The best part about racing U.S. Nationals back home is that it’s at home. I get to sleep in my own bed for the first time all season, ski the best mountain in the world, get to be with all my friends and actually get to ski in front of my family and all my friends. It’s the first time I’ve raced at Squaw probably since I was a Mighty Mite. I don’t even know. I haven’t raced there in a long time. It’s really fun to come back and ski at home.

There’s so many people on the U.S. Ski Team from Squaw Valley. That mountain just breeds good skiers. I have a lot to give back to the mountain. That mountain taught me how to do what I do now. So it’s fun to come back home and show all my other teammates that place, if they’ve never been there, and end the season with some good California sunshine and some good powder hopefully.

The Mountain Collective Resorts Join to Auction Off the Truly Ultimate Vacation Package to Benefit the Shane McConkey Foundation

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] March 18, 2013 - The leadership of mountain resorts represented in the new Mountain Collective pass have joined forces to auction off the Truly Ultimate Vacation package, with all proceeds benefitting the Shane McConkey Foundation in conjunction with the 2013 Pain McShlonkey Classic on March 30. The Truly Ultimate Vacation Package includes private air transportation, premier accommodations, lift tickets, and ground transportation for four people to all six of the Mountain Collective destinations: AltaSnowbird, Aspen/Snowmass, Jackson Hole, Mammoth Mountain, Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows and Whistler Blackcomb.

The Truly Ultimate Vacation package is available for online auction from now through 6 p.m. on March 29. The online auction can be found at: http://auctions.readysetauction.com/squawvalley/

“The leadership of the mountain resorts involved with The Mountain Collective have a shared passion for the mountain spirit and life,” said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. “Putting these legendary mountains together with private air travel will make for what we think will be a phenomenal package all in support of the McConkey Foundation and in celebration of Shane’s life and spirit.”

The Shane McConkey Foundation honors those who inspire positive change in the world and the life of others. Shane McConkey altered the paths of countless friends, acquaintances and strangers through his accomplishments, generous spirit, laughter and his positive outlook on life. He was an innovator, a goofball, a friend, a husband and a father, but his zest for life carried into his deep appreciation for the environment and living creatures. The goal of the Foundation is twofold: to carry on this legacy through random acts of kindness and charitable giving and to inspire others to make a difference in the world at large.

The Pain McShlonkey Classic is the primary fundraiser for the Shane McConkey Foundation. This year’s event will benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District’s environmental education programs.

“I want to thank Squaw for their invaluable support and contributions to the foundation,” said Sherry McConkey, president, founder and chairwoman of the Shane McConkey Foundation. “Andy Wirth and his team have constructed the experience of a life time. I know Shane would have given this North American ski trip one zillion G.N.A.R points.”

The top three online bids for the Truly Ultimate Vacation package will earn the right to enter the final live auction taking place at the McConkey Gala on March 29. The three finalists will be patched into the live auction emceed by Roy Tuscany of High Fives Non-Profit Foundation.

The Pain McShlonkey Classic Returns to Squaw Valley on March 30

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] March 14, 2013 - Witness the greatest ski competition known to man or woman! The Pain McShlonkey Classic (PMS) returns to Squaw Valley March 30. Now in its third year, this action packed on- and off-mountain event serves as a hilarious tribute to legendary skier Shane McConkey where the winner is crowned fastest snow blader on the planet.

Saturday’s on-mountain antics promise excitement and entertainment for all as the World’s top winter athletes converge in ridiculous outfits and snowblades for what’s arguably the most anticipated spectacle of the winter.

Hosted by the Shane McConkey Foundation (SMF), the event has grown to be a highly successful fundraiser for local non-profits. “The mission,” says SMF founder Sherry McConkey, “is to celebrate the life of a man who revolutionized the ski industry and kept us on the edge of our seats with laughter - and in doing so we can support causes that Shane cared about.” This year’s event will benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District’s environmental education programs.

The festivities begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. as athletes line up atop the legendary KT-22 chairlift for an all-out snowblade blitz. The pros will take on 30 amateurs in an anything-goes battle to the finish on Squaw’s GS Bowl, named for the original 1960 Olympic Giant Slalom course. Pros are invited to compete while amateur contestants are selected by submitting their most embarrassing moment in an online contest.

Later, spectators gather below the outcroppings of Squaw’s Enchanted Forrest for the Extreme Snowblade Small Mountain Invitational – a crowd favorite. Cheer on winter sports legends as they flip, flop and finagle for approval from a cast of celebrity judges.

The other crowd favorite is the PMS Costume Contest held at Squaw’s KT Base Bar. This contest is open to everyone with great prizes awarded for best dressed. Awards will follow directly.

This year SMF is taking the grand finale after party to a whole new level with a surprise performance and prizes awarded for best 80’s outfit. Guests must be 21 or older to attend with valid ID required. Tickets are available for purchase at www.shanemcconkey.org and Le Chamois. Party is held at the Squaw Valley Conference Center/Olympic Village Lodge). Tickets do sell out, and advance purchase recommended.

The Shane McConkey Foundation encourages skiers, riders and resorts around the world to celebrate the spirit of McConkey during this weekend. “The best way to keep Shane's legacy alive is to remember to laugh at yourself and live life to the fullest,” says Sherry McConkey. “Even if you can’t be here on March 30, you should still do something outrageous and fun to honor this amazing man.”

For event details, registration information, after party tickets or to make a donation to the Shane McConkey Foundation, visit www.shanemcconkey.org.

Times and venues are subject to change pending weather.

[Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, Calif.] March 13, 2013 – With 300 inches of snow already fallen this winter season, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are gearing up for a fantastic spring season. Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have already received over two feet of snow this March, and forecasters are noting a chance of more snow as early as next week. March is a historically snowy month for the Lake Tahoe resorts, with March snowfall averaging over 154 inches in the past four years.

In addition to great snow, the spring months bring endless good times for skiers and riders at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. Both resorts are known for their legendary corn snow and great spring skiing conditions, sunny skies and temperatures warm enough for girls to ski in their bikinis.

Squaw Valley’s spring scene offers a complete calendar of events ranging from après music in the Village at Squaw Valley to High Camp pool parties at the resort’s truly unique mountaintop pool and hot tub located at elevation 8,200 feet. Spring is also the time for some of Squaw’s wacky signature events such as Retro Ski Day and the Lake Cushing Crossing; the original pond skimming event where skiers and snowboarders ride down the slope and attempt to cross a freezing cold pond. Squaw Valley’s mountaintop pool and hot tub are schedule to open on March 23.

Just on the other side of the ridgeline, Alpine Meadows is also known for incredible spring skiing and nonstop fun. Skiers and riders can follow the sun as the groomers warm up and end up at the Ice Bar at the bottom of Sherwood Run to relax and enjoy an ice cold beverage. Recognized as one of Tahoe’s most unique spots to gather with friends and catch a few rays of the Sierra’s famous sunshine, the Ice Bar is a springtime hotspot. Alpine is notorious for their Ice Bar parties complete with DJs, hula hoop contests and miscellaneous shenanigans. This spring, Alpine Meadows will also be hosting the Red Bull Schlittentag, the 30th anniversary of Snow Golf, and the Spring Music Series featuring live music every weekend throughout the spring season.

Experiencing spring skiing at Squaw and Alpine has never been easier with great new spring lodging packages such as the Spring Getaway package, which start at $118 per person/per night including lift tickets and pool access.
