QUOTES

Bill Marolt, USSA President and CEO
The Squaw Valley community has produced some of the greatest Olympic skiers in history like Julia Mancuso, Tamara McKinney and Jimmie Heuga. That legacy helped bring out some of the biggest crowds in the history of the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships last spring. I have no doubt they will come out again to welcome home our 2014 Olympic Team from Sochi and cheer the best USSA club athletes in the country during our annual celebration of ski racing.

Julia Mancuso, Squaw Valley, Olympic Champion
It's great to get to race at my home mountain and it's awesome to have Squaw's support for ski racing. They did an exceptional job this season, so I definitely look forward to some more great races on home snow after the Olympics.

Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley, President and CEO
We are thrilled and honored to be hosting the U.S. Alpine Championships at Squaw Valley for a second year. We had a hugely successful event this year but will be offering even more programming in 2014 as we welcome our American Olympians home from Sochi with a community-wide celebration honoring athletes across the winter disciplines.

Michelle Peterson, Nature Valley, Associate Marketing Director
After this year’s successful event, we are excited that the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships will be returning to Squaw Valley next spring. Being able to celebrate the close of ski season at beautiful Squaw Valley will be a truly special experience.

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] April 19, 2013 – The Mountain of Strings concert featuring Yonder Mountain String Band, Del McCoury Band and Tony Furtado comes to Squaw Valley on Sunday, April 28. The all-ages show will take place at the base of the mountain in an outdoor tent in front of the Olympic Village Lodge (also known as OVL or the Squaw Valley Conference Center) from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The concert is presented by Devildog Productions, the Crystal Bay Club Casino and Pet Projects Presents.

Concertgoers can ski and ride the morning at Alpine Meadows before heading over to the show at Squaw. The free Squaw Alpine Express shuttle will be running between Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows every day that the lifts are spinning.

“With big names in bluegrass like Del McCoury and Yonder Mountain String Band coming to Squaw, I can’t imagine a better way to end another great season of skiing, riding and après parties,” said Sean Kristl, Squaw Valley’s event manager. “This show will be a guaranteed good time after our final morning of spring skiing.”

Headlining the show, Yonder Mountain String Band is an American progressive bluegrass group from Nederland, Colorado. Composed of Dave Johnston, Jeff Austin, Ben Kaufmann, and Adam Aijala, the band has released five studio albums and several live recordings to date.

The Del McCoury Band is a bluegrass band. Originally Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals with Del on guitar and his brother Jerry on bass, the band went through a number of changes until the 1980s when the band solidified its line-up, by adding McCoury's sons Ronnie and Robbie on mandolin and banjo, respectively. American banjo player Tony Furtado will be performing as the show's opening act.

Tickets for the Mountain of Strings concert are $40 in advance and $45 at the door. Tickets are available at www.cbc.tickets.musictoday.com/CrystalBayCasino/calendar.aspx. VIP tickets are available for $65 and include access to a private area inside OVL, no host bar, free appetizers, limited edition event poster and VIP after party with live music from Lonsesome Locomotive.

Prior to Sunday’s show at Squaw Valley, the Crystal Bay Club is hosting the Mountain of Strings Pre-Party with the Dead Winter Carpenters and the Travelin’ McCourys in the Crystal Bay Club Crown Room. Squaw Valley Hosts the Legendary Lake Cushing Crossing This Saturday, April 13

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] April 9, 2013 – Squaw Valley is excited to announce that the 23rd Annual Lake Cushing Crossing will take place this Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m.

*Click to view and download images from the Cushing Crossing.

The Cushing Crossing is the resort’s acclaimed pond skimming event that challenges participants to cross the vast and chilly waters of Cushing Pond on skis, a snowboard or any ski or snowboard-based vessel. The event is known for colossal crashes, hilarious costumes, and ultra-creative pond skimming contraptions.

Since the creation of the Cushing Crossing over 20 years ago, plenty of ski resorts have come up with their own pond skimming events, yet none rival this one. Perhaps it is because the characters at Squaw are a little more creative. Or maybe it is because Cushing Pond is a real pond, rather than a tarp-lined ditch or kiddie pool. Whatever the reason, the Cushing Crossing blows other pond skimming events out of the water, as demonstrated by the thousand plus spectators that come out for the event every year.

Prizes for the winners of the Cushing Crossing will be as follows:

Overall: 2013/14 Bronze Season Pass, GoPro Hero 3, $200 cash
Men’s Ski: GoPro Hero 3, Oakley Goggles, $100 cash
Men’s Snowboard: GoPro Hero 3, Oakley Goggles, $100 Cash
Women’s Ski: GoPro Hero 3, Oakley Goggles, $100 Cash
Woman’s Snowboard: GoPro Hero 3, Oakley Goggles, $100 Cash
Unlimited: GoPro Hero 3, $100 cash
Most Creative: Oakley Goggles, Squaw swag, $100 cash
Skinny Ski (70mm or less): Oakley Goggles, Squaw swag, $100 cash
In addition to the legendary pond skimming event, this weekend boasts an incredible lineup of spring fun at Squaw Valley with a Saturday pool party at High Camp, great ski conditions, sunny skies in the forecast, and music at the KT Base Bar.

The Cushing Crossing is open to the first 50 registrants. Registration this year will take place at the KT Base Bar at 9 a.m. and the competition kicks off at 1 p.m. The cost to participate is $20 per person. All entrants must be 18 years of age or older. Life preserver and a helmet are required. For more information, please see www.squaw.com.

The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival Returns to The Village at Squaw Valley on Saturday, April 20

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] April 5, 2013 - The 2013 Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival is slated for Saturday, April 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Village at Squaw Valley. This all ages, community-sponsored event gives participants an opportunity to learn about recycling/composting, alternative energy, sustainability, watershed and forest health, and reducing ecological footprints via a diverse array of agency representatives and earth-friendly vendors. It is the largest eco-event in North Lake Tahoe/Truckee area.

Earth Day is a Zero Waste event. Typical trash receptacles will not be available in an effort to drastically minimize waste. Booth participants are requested to minimize handouts and implement other forms of waste reduction. All food vendors will be using biodegradable take-out containers made of either paper or PLA. Food and biodegradable waste will be collected by volunteers and IVGID Waste Not and composted by Full Circle Compost in Minden, Nevada.

This year’s theme is “Do Another Thing.” All participants are asked to consider and implement their pledge or DOT to help the environment. Participants can also help support the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Foundation is by purchasing raffle tickets to win a selection of great prizes.

Children’s Zone and Entertainment
The Tram plaza will come alive for the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival with hands-on stations designed to educate, enrich, and entertain kids of all ages. This year in The Village, kids can get dirty in the Composting Zone, learn how to recycle, learn about solar panels, and get their face fainted. The Science Wizard, a professional children's entertainer and improv comic, will also be performing some of his favorite experiments.

Great Live Music
Continuing in the tradition of great music at Earth Day, this year will feature Sneaky Creatures, a new mischievous, gypsy jazz/alt-country quintet from the Lake Tahoe area, who have been creeping into the North Lake Tahoe music scene with their truly unique blend music. The Earth Day line up also includes The Sierra Drifters, a four piece Americana and roots-rock band, and guitarist JJ von Briesen.

Envirolution Trashion Show
Back by popular demand this year is the Envirolution Trashion Show. The Truckee High School Envirolution Club “Trashion” show is a recycling fashion show displaying artsy outfits that students have made themselves out of materials that do not biodegrade easily. Each outfit has a commentary that is both funny and educational, sending a message of positive action; that everyone can consciously work at reducing, reusing, and recycling, and that the time to start is now. The youth involved in Bright Futures provide specific actions that reduce energy use and waste at school sites, homes and businesses by involving more students in making a positive difference.

FREE Community Recycling Event
Regional residents and event-goers can drop off old electronic equipment or shred paper. The collection event will occur in The Village parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A complete list of items accepted is available at www.tahoetruckeeearthday.org. Absolutely no hazardous waste including items such as paint or fluorescent light bulbs will be accepted. There is a limit of four boxes per individual to shred. No businesses, please.
