SQUAW VALLEY PARTNERS WITH SKIDUCK TO PROVIDE FREE SKIING & SNOWBOARDING FOR DISADVANTAGED KIDS
[Squaw Valley USA] February 24, 2010 – On February 28, Squaw Valley, USA hosts its second of six on-slope events with SkiDUCK, a new non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of disabled and underprivileged children by sharing the joys of skiing and snowboarding. Nearly 60 children from Reno’s North Valley schools will visit Squaw Valley for the first time to learn to ski or snowboard free of charge.

SkiDUCK founder Clint Lunde noted, “We’re so grateful to Squaw Valley and our other participating Tahoe resorts for their generous donations of free lift tickets, rentals, and lessons. Without their support, most of these kids would never have the opportunity to learn the sport that many of us grew up with and have grown to love.”

“We’re so lucky to live in one of the most beautiful areas in the country. It’s important that we give children who may not have access to the mountains the chance to learn and appreciate all they have to offer. Besides being fun now, it may also open up a whole new world of opportunity for them in the future!”

SkiDUCK is partnering with youth service organizations like Big Brother Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Clubs from western Nevada to the Bay Area to provide skiing and snowboarding for the rest of the season. Since many children don’t have mountain-weather attire, they’re seeking donations of youth ski or snowboard clothing and gear (including goggles, helmets, jackets, snow-pants, gloves and mittens).

Those interested in volunteering with SkiDUCK or learning more about the organization can visit www.SkiDUCK.org or call 775-287-6464.

WORLD’S BEST FREERIDERS SLATED TO MAKE HISTORY AT FREERIDE WORLD TOUR’S NISSAN TRAM FACE - SQUAW VALLEY USA,
FEBRUARY 27 – MARCH 5, 2010
[Squaw Valley USA] February 21, 2010 – The world's best freeriders are looking to make history on Squaw Valley USA's most visible yet permanently closed peak during the Nissan Tram Face Competition on February 27, 2010. As the only North American stop on the international Freeride World Tour, Squaw Valley USA hosts the world’s best big mountain skiers as they prepare to tackle the infamous Tram Face. The pressure is rising with two out of four competitions already completed of the Freeride World Tour 2010. By the third tour stage, the leading candidates for the Freeride World Champion title will be looking to make a major impression on the face that has never officially been ridden before. Though the Nissan Tram Face is scheduled to take place Saturday, February 27, the weather window for the event spans from February 27 to March 5, 2010 to ensure ideal conditions.

Strictly illegal to ski, the Tram Face is being opened specifically for the Freeride World Tour (FWT) competition. Its steep and seemingly un-skiable pitch, permanent closure, and tantalizing location in perfect view from Squaw Valley’s Village and base area have made it a coveted descent among the strong local freeride community. Several of the top American riders are from Squaw Valley including Jermey Jones, J.T. Holmes, Tim Dutton, Cody Townsend, Elyse Saugstad and Will Brommelsiek, all of whom will be aiming for a victory on home snow as well as to score important points on the FWT ranking.

As would be expected of such a headlining event, the valley will erupt with street parties, live music, and other festivities all week long. With Tram Face completely visible from the parking lot, Monster is throwing a Tailgate party for spectators complete with emcee, music, product giveaways, and food and beer for purchase.

Wild card standings for the Nissan Tram Face competition include Olympic gold medallist in the women's boardercross, Maelle Ricker (CAN), and legendary snowboarder Jeremy Jones (USA), who will join the international elite of freeride skiers and snowboarders for this third competition of the four stages’ world tour.

Quotes from Competitors:

“I am looking forward to see the first descents that are going to be skied on Tram Face. The event has a potential to be the ultimate show for the public! We consider Tram Face the forbidden fruit and it will be nice to get a taste of it!” - JT Holmes (USA - local Squaw Valley rider 10th on the Freeride World Tour Ranking Men Ski)

“The level among the riders has increased constantly since the first edition of the Tour. It is no longer enough to be a great skier to take part of the Tour. Physical and mental preparation, thorough inspection of the competition face, and top gear, are all important elements that has helped develop freeriding to a professional sport, becoming more and more known by the broad public.” - Freeride World Champion 2009 Aurélien Ducroz of France.

“The reason I strived so much to get on the Freeride World Tour is because there is no Olympics in extreme skiing. [The Freeride World Tour] is the end of the line right there . . . so for me, being able to compete on the tour is amazing, it’s definitely where the top athletes are today and where it’s going on.” - Tim Dutton, Squaw Valley freerider taking on his childhood heroes on the esteemed Freeride World Tour beginning in Sogchi, Russia. Tim Dutton Freeride World tour interview and action footage is available (courtesy of Freeride World Tour) here.

HELLY HANSEN BRINGS THE BIG MOUNTAIN BATTLE TO SQUAW VALLEY USA ON FEBRUARY 20
Teams of two skiers and riders compete for prizes and a chance to win an all-expense-paid trip to the finals in Aspen/Snowmass

[Squaw Valley USA] February 5, 2009 - Helly Hansen’s renowned all-mountain competition is returning to Squaw Valley USA this February. In its second year, this unique competition challenges teams of skiers and riders to explore their favorite resort from top to bottom for a chance to win an all-expense-paid trip to the finals in Aspen/Snowmass. The Big Mountain Battle comes to Squaw Valley USA on February 20, 2010.

The Squaw Valley USA Big Mountain Battle is one of seven tour stops. At each stop, teams of two take on courses designed by Jeff McKitrick and Helly Hansen. Teams (ski, snowboard, or mixed) must complete each of the hikes. Flaik GPS devices will track the performance of each participant.

“Last year’s Big Mountain Battle Series was a huge success” said Marshall Rutman, Helly Hansen’s North American Marketing Manager. “It’s a truly unique event that will challenge skiers and snowboarders of all levels.”

Teams can ski anywhere for extra points once they have completed the designated bowls. The top three teams to complete the hikes, course and checkpoints in the fastest times are awarded prizes. Teams can win in the following categories after completing the designated bowls: Fastest Hike, Most Vertical, Most Runs and Most Lift Rides. The team to finish with the most points wins a trip to Aspen/Snowmass to compete in the Big Mountain Battle Finals on March 28, 2010.

The Squaw Valley USA Big Mountain Battle begins at 10 am at High Camp on Saturday, February 20. The event pre-registration entry fee is $75 per team and includes two Helly Hansen LIFA® base layers valued at $45 each. Online pre-registration closes Thursday, February 18 at midnight, and check-in will be from 8am to 9:30am at a location TBD. Entry is limited to the first 100 teams, and registration on the day of the event is available for $10 more per person. The awards ceremony kicks off at 1:30pm at the Chamois.

THE ICE BAR RETURNS TO HIGH CAMP AT SQUAW VALLEY USA

[Squaw Valley USA] February 2, 2010 – Squaw Valley USA and Stoli Vodka team up to bring the renowned Ice Bar at High Camp back to Squaw Valley for the second year in a row. Guests can ride the Cable Car to High Camp, el. 8,200’ to experience Lake Tahoe’s coldest hot spot. The Stoli Ice Bar is an outdoor bar made entirely out of ice, serving ice cold beer, barbeque items and specialty winter cocktails. The bar will be open during après ski hours, weather permitting, for as long as the ice lasts.

The Stoli Ice Bar is Squaw Valley’s newest addition for mountain-top dining, featuring unparalleled views of the Sierra and Lake Tahoe. The bar was designed and built by Squaw Valley’s award winning culinary team and world champion sculptor Scott Rella of “Fear No Ice.” The Stoli Ice Bar is made of 20,000 pounds of ice, constructed from 64 300 pound ice blocks. The team carved the Ice Bar using chain saws, chisels, Japanese carving saws and nail board grinders. The bar comes complete with two shot luges, a grill and DJs on weekends.

The grand opening of the Stoli Ice Bar kicks off Saturday, February 6 at High Camp. Guests can spend their Saturday night enjoying refreshing drink specials and the smooth sounds of DJ spun jams. The Stoli Ice Bar Opening Party will run from 4pm to 9pm at the top of the Cable Car.
