With Record Breaking Snowfall, Squaw Valley Extends Season Through Memorial Day Weekend
Squaw Valley USA reaches record snowfall total at 691” and extends season to May 30

[Squaw Valley USA] March 28, 2011 – After breaking the highest season snowfall total on record with an accumulation of 691 inches, Squaw Valley USA has extended their ski season to May 30, 2011. Squaw Valley is widely known as North America’s spring skiing capital, however, conditions this year will be better than ever as a result of this season’s phenomenal snowfall.

In addition to epic spring skiing and riding conditions, Squaw Valley will also a host an amazing line-up of live music, pool parties and incredible vacation packages this spring. Following May 8, the resort will move to Friday-Sunday operations, offering skiing and riding May 13-16, May 20-22 and May 27-30, 2011. Additional days of operation include Monday, May 16, for the Stage 2 start of the Amgen Tour of California and Monday, May 30, the Memorial Day holiday.

The storms of the last two weeks brought more than 150 inches of fresh powder to the resort. With records dating back to 1970, Squaw Valley has surpassed the highest season snowfall total on record of 662 inches set in the 1994-1995 winter season. Nearing the 700 inch milestone, the resort has already exceeded the average total of 450 inches. More snow is sure to come with two more months until the season end.

“With this much snow, Squaw Valley will have great coverage through May 30 and possibly even longer,” said Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley’s Chief Executive Officer. “We will certainly be examining the possibility of opening for July 4, conditions permitting.”

While Squaw Valley is already well known for incredible spring conditions and exciting ski atmosphere, this season will be one to remember. Through the end of May, the resort’s famous High Camp Swimming Lagoon & Hot Tub will host one-of-a-kind pool parties at the top of the mountain as the KT Sundeck hosts an array of live music and DJs for an après ski scene like no other.

“It’s not just the ski season that we’re extending, we’re extending Squaw Valley’s unparalleled spring scene,” noted Wirth. “Unlike other resorts whose operations and accessibility will have diminished by April and May, Squaw Valley will be offering amazing skiing and riding, incredible spring lodging packages and unmatched accessibility for destination travelers through the Reno Tahoe International Airport.”

Skiers and riders can take advantage of the abundant snowfall with a Spring Pass for just $199. The 2011 Spring Pass is valid 7 days a week from April 4, 2011 through the newly-extended end of the 2010-2011 winter season. If purchased with a 2011-2012 season pass, spring visitors will receive a discounted rate of $129.

With the Swimming Lagoon & Hot Tub set to open April 1 and other High Camp activities, spring at Squaw provides just as much excitement off the slopes, as it does on the slopes. On April 9, guests can join Olympic Gold Medalist Julia Mancuso at the Julia Mancuso Kiss My Tiara Pool Party followed by a free outdoor concert by Donavan Frankenreiter on the KT Sundeck. Bring the whole family Easter Weekend with a chance to ski with the Easter Bunny and participate in the on-mountain Egg Hunt. Live music, outdoor sundecks, poolside restaurants, and more make Squaw the place to be this season.

Squaw Valley's snowfall records date back to 1970, and this season marks the third time on record that Squaw Valley has reached the significant 50' milestone. The only other seasons to reach a 50' snowfall total were winter 1994-1995 and winter 2005-2006, but unlike this season, neither surpassed the 50' mark before April. Spring at Squaw Valley blends the best of both worlds: sunny California weather and incredible snow. After hitting the slopes, guests can enjoy Squaw’s many outdoor sundecks, patios and mountaintop swimming lagoon, opening April 2, at High Camp, el. 8200’. An array of spring festivities, from the Kiss My Tiara Pool Party to the North Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Celebration, adds to the excitement of the season as Squaw brings visitors all the best in western skiing.

A REBIRTH OF AN OLD EVENT~

McShlonkey Classic
It's been 8 long years since the inaugural Pain McShlonkey Classic, and we're excited to bring it back to Squaw Valley USA. Masterminded by Shane McConkey in 2003, this event will serve as a hilarious tribute to the legendary skier.

It all begins with the Extreme Snowlerblading Small Mountain Invitational...
Cheer on the select group of 30 pro athletes as they negotiate Squaw's legendary terrain on K2 Fatty Snowblades! Watch as Daron Rhalves, JT Holmes, Scott and Robb Gaffney and Jeremy Jones put it all on the line to get to the top of the podium.

Snowlerblade Chinese Downhill...

After the pros get done jumping off stuff on their snowlerblades, they'll take on 30 of McConkey's biggest fans in an anything-goes Snowlerblade Chinese Downhill. A jury of McConkey's peers have selected the 30 amateur competitors via an online contest.

Check out the 30 Amateurs Competitors Here
