Rhalves’ Banzai Returns to Alpine Meadows
The 3rd annual Rahlves’ Banzai Tour stop returns to Alpine

[Alpine Meadows, Calif.] January 28, 2013 – Alpine Meadows hosts the 3rd annual Rahlves’ Banzai Tour stop, February 9 and 10. This event showcases racing in its purest form with four at a time going head-to-head over natural terrain in ski and boarder-cross style action. The race will take place on The Face of Wolverine Bowl, offering one of the best spectator venues in the region.

Time trials take place Saturday, Feb. 9, with a solo qualifying run that will rank the top 32 men for ski/board and top 16 women for ski/board to move on to the finals Sunday, Feb. 10 to compete for a $15,000 prize purse. There are four stops on the tour and the overall tour prize purse total is $80,000.

This event combines the competitive excitement of skier and boardercross with the speed-thrill of a downhill race. Event organizer Daron Rahlves, a former US World Cup and Olympic skier, knows a thing or two about both. With 12 World Cup gold medals, Rahlves has won more medals and achieved more podium finishes spanning the globe than any other American man in the history of ski racing and competition. Rahlves’ vision to fuse skier/boardercross and downhill racing equals one maniacal display of speed, strength and strategy through Alpine’s most difficult steeps and off-trail terrain, non-stop from summit to base.

The Rhavles' Banzai will also make a stop at Squaw Valley, March 2 and 3. The final stop of the tour, March 9-10 at Sugar Bowl, will feature a “Super Final” in which former World Champion, 12-time World Cup winner, X-Games Gold Medalist and four-time Olympic skier Daron Rahlves will race against the four men’s skiing division winners from each stop on this year’s tour. The crowned winners of the tour will all be vying to beat Rahlves and to take home the title of "Banzai Master" with a cash prize of $10,000; winner takes all.

High Fives Foundation will host a Saturday après ski party from 3-6 p.m. at Alpine Meadows’ Last Chair Bar. Spectators, competing athletes, media, and fans are invited to celebrate all things Banzai and party down for a great cause. The après ski parties are sponsored by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Sierra Nevada will be donating one dollar from every Sierra Nevada beer purchased throughout the evening to High Fives Foundation. In addition to drink specials, a live raffle and après ski fun, Daron Rahlves and Bank of the West will be awarding $200 to the fastest qualifier of the day. These festive events, allow fans to mingle with the stars of the tour, including Daron Rahlves himself, while raising money for a great local foundation.

About the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour:

Banzai is a Japanese term expressed as an exuberant cheer meaning, “Long Life!” or “Hurray!” An apt name for a high-spirited downhill ski and snowboard competition, the Silver Belt Race first took place in the 1940s at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort and was re-introduced with the head-to-head action by Daron Rahlves and Sugar Bowl in 2009. The race continued with one event for another year, and then Rahlves decided to take the show on the road, officially launching the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour and expanding to stops at four of Lake Tahoe's premier resorts.

The Rahlves’ Banzai tour is presented by Bank of The West. The Rahlves’ Banzai Tour is also supported by sponsors such as Red Bull, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Contour, CEP “intelligent sportswear”, North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, Spyder, Atomic, Start Haus Ski Shop, Wend Wax, COAL, SVE/BOSE, The Bar Effect, World Cup Supply, Snow Fest, Sports Insurance, Technical Equipment Cleaners, and CRUX Events, thereby creating an alluring $80,000 prize purse. Building on the tour’s success and evolution, Rahlves has designated the worthy High Fives Foundation as the tour’s official non-profit partner. For more information on High Fives Foundation, please visit www.highfivesfoundation.org.

KIRKWOOD TO HOST FIRST STOP OF RAHLVES’ BANZAI TOUR

Ski and Border-Cross Style Action Showcases Extreme Kirkwood Terrain

Participants Compete for “Banzai Master” Title and Cash Prizes

Kirkwood, Calif. – January 28, 2013 – On Feb. 1-3, 2013, big mountain freeride action meets ski and boarder-cross strategy in a mad-dash race for cash, as Kirkwood Mountain Resort hosts the first stop on the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, presented by Bank of the West. Taking place at four Lake Tahoe, CA resorts, it’s head–to-head action, four at a time, top to bottom, down a wide open course over natural terrain and snow conditions. This is the ultimate test of ski and riding skills.

“The Rahlves’ Banzai Tour is an exciting event that really utilizes the big-mountain, challenging terrain Kirkwood is known for,” said Casey Blann, Kirkwood’s general manager. “It’s not an easy race or one for the faint of heart. Watching these talented, daring skiers and snowboarders compete, is going to be a thrill.”

Kirkwood is known for a ton of snow and rowdy terrain, and the Rahlves' Banzai Tour takes advantage of both with the Wall Banzai. The open top section off the Wall winds down into the CEP compression and off the cat road at top of Chair 11 where athletes launch into Snow Snake Gully. From here, it's riding the gully up on the banks to funneling right down the pipe. Look for passing in the upper section and in the tight turns when a rider is loose on the line. Spectator prime locations are the start on the ridge, cat road crossing at top of Chair 11, skiers left bank of the gully and at the finish for the drag race to the line. Competition registration is open to anyone 18 years old and up.

Daron Rahlves, World Champion, USA Olympic ski racer, Winter X-Games Skier-X Champion and creator of the event, will be on-hand throughout the competition and at the welcome and après parties to sign autographs and conduct interviews with media. Media are invited to meet-and-greet athletes at both the Welcome Party on Feb. 1 and at the Après Party on Feb. 2

On Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., tour participants, including athletes, sponsors, friends, family, media, race crew and resort affiliates, are invited to celebrate the beginning of the Kirkwood tour stop at the Welcome Party at Red Cliffs Lodge with food, drinks and music. This is an ideal setting for athletes and media to mingle, as well as build up excitement for the tour stop.

The solo qualifying timed runs to seed Sunday’s final heats of four will take place on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., with Sunday’s finals also taking place from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

The Rahlves' Banzai Après Party, hosted by High Fives Foundation, will be held on Feb. 2, 2013 at Red Cliffs from 3:00-6:00 p.m. During the après party, Daron Rahlves will recognize the Bank of the West "fastest qualifier" and fastest times from each division, as well as announce the winners of the High Fives raffle with sponsor prizes, which includes two Kirkwood lift tickets.

Book your lodging by Jan. 31 and received 25 percent off your entire booking. Book online at www.kirkwood.com using the promo code “EVENTK” or call 1-800-967-7500.

BIG EVENT

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows to Host The North Face Masters of Snowboarding February 13-17

[Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, Calif.] January 23, 2013 - The North Face Masters of Snowboarding presented by PrimaLoft will take place February 13-17, 2013 at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows in Lake Tahoe, California. The event will feature top big mountain snowboard competitors battling for The North Face Masters of Snowboarding champion title, $15,000 in prize money and a chance to advance to the 2014 SWATCH Freeride World Tour by The North Face.

The event will feature one open 2-star Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) event at Alpine Meadows (Feb. 13-14) with the top five men and top three females advancing to the Masters 4-star Championship event. The Masters Championship event will take place over two days (Feb. 14-17) at Squaw Valley immediately following the qualifier event at Alpine Meadows. Riders participating in the Squaw Valley competition will also earn 4-star FWQ points. A seeding list will be created to qualify athletes for the 4-star event based off 2012 Masters of Snowboarding results.

“We are truly thrilled and honored to welcome The North Face Masters to our mountains,” said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. “The North Face Masters is undeniably one of the most prestigious events in big mountain snowboarding, and we look forward to watching the best snowboarders test their skills on our legendary terrain.”

In addition to the championship title, The North Face will also grant the A-Rob award in honor and memory of the late Masters’ champion Aaron Robinson. The A-Rob award captures the spirit of the community and desire to explore the mountains. Another award up for grabs is The Young Gun Award for the under 21 rider who demonstrates raw talent, an innovative riding style and exemplifies true sportsmanship and passion for the mountains.

"Now in its sixth season, The North Face Masters is one of the largest big mountain snowboarding competition in the country, providing an opportunity for established riders, as well as up-and-comers, to put together a winning run during competition," said The North Face Director, Sports Marketing Katie Ramage. "Utilizing control, fluidity, creativity and style in choosing their line, riders embrace the natural features within the venue to showcase their sport which continues to advance. We're excited to bring this event to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows given their world class terrain and history of attracting world class riders."

The North Face Masters is part of the Freeride World Qualifier system. FWQs are rated on a 1 to 4-star scale with competitors earning more or less points at events according to venue difficulty and scale, competitive pool and other factors. The Masters is the top-level qualifier event and a pivotal step for athletes hoping to advance to the SWATCH Freeride World Tour by The North Face.

The North Face Masters of Snowboarding is presented by Primaloft and supported by Subaru of America, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Mountain Sports International, Snowboard Magazine, Clif Bar, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.

IT"S SKI S.A.F.E.T.Y. WEEK AT SUGAR BOWL

Join us at Sugar Bowl this week for National Safety Awareness Week! From Tuesday to Sunday, we’re breaking down S.A.F.E.T.Y. and promoting a different element of our safety program each day. If we all adhere to S.A.F.E.T.Y. every day, we can all enjoy safe and memorable mountain adventures, all season long.

S is for Sit on the Spot, and our new Chairlift Safety Initiative. Bullseye targets have been placed on the seats of select lifts, serving as the ideal location to sit and stay for the duration of the chairlift ride. We’ve opened a stationary practice chair for pre-lift warm-ups, installed closed-circuit cameras for improved lift operator training, expanded reduced ratio 3:1 student-to-instructor lessons, and placed educational awareness signage for skiers and riders under 51” promoting proper safety bar usage. On Tuesday, ride the Nob Hill, Christmas Tree and White Pine chairlifts to sit on the spot!

A is for Avalanche Awareness and our Backcountry Adventure Center, offering educational seminars on the science of snow and professionally guided-tours into the backcountry. Know before you go! Sign up for one of our outings today. On Wednesday, stop in and say hi to the guides at the BAC.

F is for First Aid and an appreciative nod to our professional and dedicated Ski Patrol, who are out there keeping our mountain safe, every day. On Thursday, stop by the patrol shack at the top of the Disney lift and say hi to the patrollers and enjoy a free hot chocolate!

E is for Education and familiarizing yourself with the Skier’s Responsibility Code and Smart Style Terrain Park Etiquette codes. It’s every skier's and rider's responsibility to know these codes! On Friday, take a lap through the terrain park and practice the codes for yourself. We’ll be out there giving away prizes to skiers and riders personifying the Responsibility and Smart Style codes.

T is for Tree Well Awareness and Snow Immersion Safety, both vitally important practices on deep powder days. On Saturday, make a conscious effort to survey your surroundings, so the next powder day you’ll know where the safest terrain is!

Y is for Y Wear a Helmet? Because it’s the smart thing to do! We actively promote Lids on Kids and encourage all skiers and riders to wear a helmet while out enjoying the mountain. On Sunday, we’ll be out and about handing out Sugar Bowl stickers to skiers & riders donning helmets while enjoying the slopes.

At Sugar Bowl we want all our guests to enjoy safe and memorable mountain adventures. By adhering to S.A.F.E.T.Y. we can all do just that! Check out the mountain safety page on the all new SugarBowl.com for more information on safety practices at Sugar Bowl Resort.

High Fives Foundation and Squaw Valley Host the Biggest 49ers Super Bowl
“Diamond Vision” Viewing Party in the Sierra

[Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, Calif.] January 20, 2013 – What could be better than spending a day skiing and riding Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows all day long then watching the 49ers play in the Super Bowl from the base of the “soul center” of skiing and snowboarding – KT-22 ? Bring the skis and snowboards along with the San Francisco 49er jerseys and join the largest on-mountain Super Bowl party and celebration of one of the greatest football teams in the country and of all time. Squaw will host a sensational viewing of the Super Bowl on a huge, 16-foot by 21-foot, 49- panel “diamond vision” screen at the KT Base Bar, located at the base of the KT-22 Lift. Lake Tahoe to Bid for X Games Winter Event

[Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev.] January 18, 2013 - The X Games could take place at the “Best Lake in America” (USA Today), Lake Tahoe in 2015-17. ESPN, which owns the X Games franchise, announced qualified entities representing cities today and Lake Tahoe was listed among the eligible destinations. Finalists will be determined by April 2013 and host cities will be announced by the end of 2013. (www.visitinglaketahoe.com)

The X Games bid is being sponsored by the Lake Tahoe Sports Organizing Committee, a new entity created to bring marquee events to the area and generate overnight stays while promoting Lake Tahoe to a global audience. Committee partners include the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, North Lake Tahoe Chamber/Convention & Visitors Bureau/Resort Association, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Squaw Valley amongst others.

According to ESPN, past X Games winter events have yielded substantial results for host cities. Aspen estimates that the X Games generates up to $10 million in identifiable benefits. The event, historically held in January or February, has attracted 20,000 to 25,000 spectators per day. The broadcast distribution alone for the X Games Aspen 2012 reached 232 million homes in 192 countries and territories. Exposure included 3.6 million (and growing) Facebook fans. Social media mavens have also boosted the grassroots popularity of the event by capturing and sharing breathtaking photos, high-energy videos and real-time updates on athletes that demonstrate the appeal of the game.

“Hosting an event of this caliber would provide significant economic impact for the destination,” said Carol Chaplin, Executive Director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “The demographics of the X Games align perfectly with attractions and appeal of Lake Tahoe and its combination of outdoor recreation, spectacular natural beauty and 24-hour lifestyle.”

“The X Games is a unique opportunity to showcase winter sports in Lake Tahoe to a targeted domestic and international audience,” said Andy Chapman, Chief Marketing Officer of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/Convention & Visitors Bureau/Resort Association. “It’s a fantastic chance to tell the world about our phenomenal snow conditions, prestigious training grounds and the many and varied resorts that make up Lake Tahoe.”

The inaugural event was in 1995 and includes extreme sports (hence the name) ranging from Snowboarder-X (Boarder Cross), Slopestyle, Superpipe, Big Air/Best Trick, Snocross and Freestyle Snowmobiling.

Competitions would be conducted at Heavenly Mountain Resort and Squaw Valley.

“Lake Tahoe is the ideal stage for a competition as big as the X Games,” said Peter Sonntag, Vice President and General Manager of Heavenly Mountain Resort. “Combine unmatched scenic beauty with huge snow and a thriving nightlife and entertainment scene, and you've got an event that no one will want to miss.”

“We are proud to be associated with Vail Resorts and Heavenly along with our regional partners to work to bring the X Games to Lake Tahoe,” said President and CEO Andy Wirth of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. “This is truly a partnership of high impact players from the region with a great deal of experience planning and staging world-class events. Over the last few decades, we’ve watched the X Games evolve. At its founding, the X Games revolutionized the landscape of winter sports and it continues to evolve and remain the single most impactful, admired and esteemed winter event, period. We sincerely hope to be a part of it the X Games’ incredible evolution.”

Lake Tahoe has been recognized by national media outlets, including Good Morning America, Travelocity, Orbitz, The New York Times, The Weather Channel, ESPN The Magazine, among others for its scenic splendor and reputation as a leader in outdoor recreation, entertainment and dining. USA Today readers recently ranked Lake Tahoe the “Best Lake in America” in a survey. For more information on Lake Tahoe, visit www.visitinglaketahoe.com.

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows offer Lift Tickets for a Good Cause

Buy a lift ticket in support of a local non-profit – a win, win

[Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, Calif.] January 15, 2013 – Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are showing their community support by providing lift tickets to five local non-profit organizations to sell at a discount. Skiers and riders can show their goodwill by purchasing an affordable lift ticket from one of the five local non-profits of their choice including Arts for the Schools, KidsZone Museum, Sierra Senior Services, Sierra Avalanche Center and Truckee Tahoe Humane Society. The tickets are valid Sunday through Friday, February 3-8, 2013.

“We are thrilled to once again be included in the Squaw and Alpine Meadows Community Ski Week,” said Stephanie Nistler, executive director, Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. “The proceeds from the tickets we sell will go directly toward helping us save the lives of homeless pets in our community and beyond. Skiing powder and helping puppies…what could be better?”

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are dedicated to being responsible stewards of this legendary mountain environment and to providing leadership to enhance the quality of life in our community. Special emphasis of community giving on behalf of Squaw and Alpine is focused on youth education, snow sports, environmental and animal protection, and community efforts to alleviate hunger.

“Our role as dedicated members of the Tahoe and Truckee communities is to give back to the organizations that support our guests and employees,” said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. “ The money raised will be used to benefit organizations and services that are extremely important to our local community.”

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows provided 300 lift tickets to each of the participating five local non-profits – a total donation of $148,500 at ticket window rates. Tickets are valid any one day between February 3-8, Sunday – Friday, at either Squaw Valley or Alpine Meadows or both resorts in the same day, accessed by the free Squaw/Alpine Express shuttle. Rates for the tickets start at $30 per ticket- a savings of up to $69.
