Rahlves’ Banzai Tour Kicks Off the KT-22 Banzai During SnowFest

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] February 25, 2013 – The first weekend in March marks the beginning of SnowFest, North Lake Tahoe’s most anticipated celebration, as well as the return of the Rahlves' Banzai to Squaw Valley. The 32nd annual SnowFest will kick off on Friday, March 1 with a torchlight parade and fireworks at the base of Squaw Valley. Then, on March 2-3, guests can join amazing athletes and great company while participating in or watching the third leg of Rahlves’ Banzai Tour: the KT-22 Banzai.

Rahlves’ Banzai Tour showcases racing in its purest form, with four racers at a time going head-to-head over natural terrain in ski and border-cross style action. The winners of each respective tour stop will have the opportunity to compete in the “Super Final” on March 9-10 against former World Champion, 12-time World Cup winner, X-Games Gold Medalist and four-time Olympic skier and Sugar Bowl Resort Ambassador Daron Rahlves. The Sugar Bowl Silver Belt Banzai and Super Final race takes place during closing weekend of SnowFest!, so don’t miss the festive Banzai and SnowFest culminating events hosted by Sugar Bowl.

“The KT-22 Banzai is always one of the most exciting parts of the tour because of the great view of the course from the base of the mountain,” said Daron Rahlves. “Spectators get to watch athletes give it their all down the face of KT-22, which embodies everything the Banzai Tour is really about; the competition, athleticism, and most importantly, the enjoyment and camaraderie of the ski and snowboard community.”

Friday night before the tour stop, competing athletes, sponsors, media and special guests are invited to the event kick-off, "Rahlves' Banzai Welcome Party" from 4-6 p.m. at Sandy’s Pub at the Resort at Squaw Creek. The welcome party ends right in time for athletes to participate in the annual opening ceremony torchlight parade. On Saturday after the solo qualifying timed runs to seed Sunday's Finals and heats of four, all competing athletes, sponsors, media and fans are invited to celebrate all things Banzai from 3-6 p.m. at Le Chamois for the "Rahlves' Banzai Après Party" thrown by High Fives Foundation. One dollar from each Sierra Nevada beer and Red Bull drink purchased throughout the après party will be donated to High Fives.

For those who are curious about the tour’s name, Banzai is a Japanese term expressed as an exuberant cheer meaning, “Long Life!” or “Hurray!” An apt name for a high-spirited downhill ski and snowboard competition, the Silver Belt Race first took place in the 1940s at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort and was re-introduced with the head-to-head action by Daron Rahlves and Sugar Bowl in 2009. The race continued with one event for another year, and then Rahlves decided to take the show on the road, officially launching Rahlves’ Banzai Tour and expanding to stops at four of Lake Tahoe's premier resorts.

The Rahlves Banzai tour is presented by Bank of The West. The Rahlves Banzai Tour is also supported by sponsors such as Red Bull, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Contour, CEP “intelligent sportswear”, North Lake Tahoe Chamber/VCB/Resort Association, Spyder, Atomic, Start Haus Ski Shop, Wend Wax, COAL, SVE/BOSE, The Bar Effect, World Cup Supply, Jagermeister, Snow Fest, Sports Insurance, Technical Equipment Cleaners, Resort at Squaw Creek, ZINKA, 101.5 Truckee Tahoe Radio, Tahoe TV, POWDER Mag, High Fives Foundation, World Cup Supply, and CRUX Events, thereby creating an alluring $80,000 prize purse.

Alpine Meadows’ Fallen Patroller Memorialized with Dog Adoption Room at the New Humane Society Shelter in Truckee
Alpine/Squaw make final donation to secure adoption room in Bill Foster’s name

*Click here to view a video tribute to Bill Foster and the patrol dogs

[Alpine Meadows and Olympic Valley, Calif.] February 16, 2013 – Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley are excited to announce the dedication of the Bill Foster dog adoption room that will be built as part of the new Truckee-Tahoe Humane Society shelter that is scheduled to be constructed this fall. The announcement of the dedication of the new adoption room will be officially made tonight at the Black Ties and Tails event. Bill Foster was a 30-year veteran ski patroller who tragically lost his life this past December while on duty at Alpine Meadows.

“In keeping with our long standing support of the Truckee-Tahoe Humane Society and in honoring Bill Foster’s memory and all the wonderful things he’s done for our mountain and community,” said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, “it’s our pleasure to announce the naming of the Bill Foster Alpine Meadows adoption room.”

Bill Foster was a mentor and coach to every Alpine Meadows dog trainer, past and present. Foster’s vision was that the avalanche rescue dog program was not a solo effort, but rather that it should bring together handlers, dogs and the community. To honor Foster, Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley complemented funds raised by the Bill Foster memorial fund with the Humane Society to secure a dog adoption room in his name.

“As part of the Humane Society’s campaign to raise money to open the new shelter this fall, there were 10 ‘dog adoption real life rooms’ available and Squaw/Alpine claimed the last one to honor Bill,” said Stephanie Nistler, executive director, Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. “The dog adoption rooms are among the most public rooms and it’s a tremendous gesture to show the people who made donations in Bill’s name that he will be a lasting legacy.”

Cats & Dogs at Squaw Valley

This is a benefit for the Squaw Dogs program and the Humane Society. This event takes place February 16-17; February 22-23; and March 29-30. Alpine Meadows and Snow Park Technologies Present Lake Tahoe’s Mile-Long Terrain Park

[Alpine Meadows, Calif.] February 11, 2013 – Park fiends in Tahoe, get stoked. The much-anticipated mile-long park is now open at Alpine Meadows. Located in North Lake Tahoe, Alpine Meadows has always been on the cutting edge of park setups, but this season is set to be the best yet. Designed under the guidance of Alpine’s Terrain Park Manager, Jonahs David, and Snow Park Tech (SPT) Project Manager, Corley Howard, Alpine's park is a mile-long consecutive run including more than 40 features (all of Alpine’s combined parks offer more than 80 features total). Named the " Firing Line" the intermediate to advanced park accessed via the Summit Chair, includes a series of jumps, jibs, wall rides, hips, and just about any type of feature one could imagine.

"You'll be able to get really creative with your lines and ride the park in a lot of different ways," said Squaw and Alpine team rider, Pat Moore. "I'm excited to have a lengthy park to get long, fun runs with my friends. Having a mile-long park means more opportunities to learn tricks and less time on the chairlift."

The mile-long park is the only one of its kind in Tahoe, and will resemble a slopestyle course with different sizes of jumps side-by-side, and many unique jib features that won't be found anywhere else. Features currently installed include a large S-rail, canon tube, wrecking ball, hitching post, oil drum, and various rails and boxes. Some features are built with recycled snowmaking pipe, lending another unique touch by incorporating a sustainable material. There will certainly be no shortage of lines to choose, making this one of the most advanced and technical parks for learning new tricks. If a rider doesn't want to lap the entire mile-long run and the upper advanced section, they can opt for just the lower section of the Firing Line, accessed via the Round House chairlift. For those that prefer an option with small to medium features, there is still a mile-long run if riders take Loop Road and hit the Side Winder park, then continue through Hot Wheels Gully and hit The Bunker near the base.

Terrain Park Manager, Jonahs David, has worked closely with his crew and SPT, the leader in snow park building for more than 15 years, to ensure the best flow and setup throughout the lengthy run.

"I’ve always liked the idea of a long park with a ton of options," said David. "Our goal is to have a top-to-bottom park that rivals any other park out there. We are trying to match our world-class terrain with a world-class terrain park."

David and his on-site crew of 17 will continue around the clock, testing the setup and changing out features to keep it interesting and exciting throughout the season.

"Our goal is to provide many options with a good flow," said David. "We have a foundation of jumps and snow features that we set all our jibs around. We try to swap jibs out every couple weeks to keep it from getting stale." David also said they are planning on doing a big rebuild in spring to match the snow conditions.

In addition to the Firing Line, Alpine also has a separate small progression park for beginners called Cannonball and a jib arena, dubbed The Barracks, at the base of the mountain. There is also a start park, Boot Camp, which is a dedicated teaching terrain with micro-features, gentle transitions, soft pitches and signage that explains how to ride the features. With endless park options this winter, it looks like Alpine is definitely the place to check out.
