Squaw Valley USA Hires JP Martin at New Terrain Park Manager

[Squaw Valley USA] September 20, 2010 – Squaw Valley USA is pleased to announce the appointment of JP Martin as the mountain’s new Terrain Park Manager. JP comes to Squaw Valley with 19 years of experience in the ski and snowboarding industry and a resume that includes experience at Whistler, Mt. Hood, Jackson Hole and many resorts in Japan. Most recently, Martin worked as the Terrain Park Manager at Sugar Bowl Resort on Donner Summit in Lake Tahoe, CA.

Martin has built terrain park features for some of the best pro skiers and riders in the industry; however, he remains dedicated to providing younger generations with a consistent venue where they can progress in the sport.

“I grew up right when all of the skate parks were being closed and bull-dozed, I wanted to do my part to make sure the parks on the mountains didn’t end up the same way. Some of the original terrain parks were huge, and there was no way to work your way up, great for the established pros, but not if you were just getting started,” said Martin.

This winter season, Squaw Valley is greatly expanding their night skiing with improved lighting in the Riviera Terrain Park and halfpipe. With any lift ticket, skiers and riders can hit the slopes from 9am to 9pm on weekends (9am to 7pm midweek) during the high winter season. The new lights will mean big things for skiers and riders looking to get their fill of park riding.

“I’m really looking forward to this season,” said Martin. “I’ve had a long indirect relationship with Squaw through association with many of the mountain’s athletes, and I’m honored to be joining the Squaw Valley team.”

Squaw Valley National Ski Patrol Wins the
National Outstanding Large Alpine Patrol Award for 2009-10

[Squaw Valley USA] September 21, 2010 – In recognition of their dedication to service and safety, the Squaw Valley National Ski Patrol, the volunteer arm of the ski patrol, was selected as the winter of the 2009-10 National Outstanding Large Alpine Patrol Award.

The award’s official name is the “Charles Minot ‘Minnie’ Dole Award for Outstanding Large Alpine Ski Patrol,” named for the founder of the National Ski Patrol. Minnie Dole founded the National Ski Patrol in 1938 and directed the organization until 1950. Among other achievements, Dole convinced the US War Department to form the 10th Mountain Division, the famous mountaineering unit of WWII.

Squaw Valley’s volunteer patrollers were chosen for the award as a result of their high level of performance and their successful integration with the resort’s paid patrollers. Due to the diversity and caliber of Squaw Valley’s terrain, all patrollers must train to higher standards and demonstrate outstanding alpine skills and techniques including high angle belaying, cliff rescue and mountaineering skills.

“Over the years the volunteers have worked really closely with the professional patrollers to create a seamless and unified patrol,” said Squaw Valley’s head of National Ski Patrol, Wes Schimmelpfennig. “This feat primarily stems from dedication and experience. The average National Patroller at Squaw Valley has been patrolling at the mountain for 18+ years, while the national average for years worked by ski patrollers is 6 years.”

Squaw Valley USA is one of the few world class resorts in America to use volunteer patrollers, yet Squaw’s volunteer patrollers have been able to adapt and find a secure niche in the operation of a major ski area. They have not only succeeded in this regard but have admirably demonstrated that National Ski Patrollers can fulfill a vital role in today’s ski industry.

Schimelpfennig continues, “The patrol has overcome its challenges in an outstanding manner and may serve as a prime example for other patrols.”

To win the Minnie Dole Award, Squaw Valley’s volunteer patrol first went up against four other patrols to win Outstanding Large Patrol in the Eastern Sierra Region. They then competed against three other patrols from other regions to win Outstanding Large Patrol in the Far West Division, and finally went on to compete with nine other patrols from other divisions to win the Minnie Dole.

All New Gallery Keoki Re-Opens at Squaw Valley USA

[Squaw Valley USA] August 31, 2010 – A mainstay of the Tahoe contemporary art scene since November 2003, Gallery Keoki has re-opened its doors with a whole new look and raison d’ĂȘtre. Nationally renowned photographer Keoki Flagg, along with new partners Rob Gussenhoven and Noelle Nixon, took the summer to complete an extensive remodeling of the 1,800-square foot space within the Village.

The result is a unique art gallery, where visitors are greeted by an interior design featuring custom-crafted cabinetry, Matrix steel photo mountings, wrought iron accents, beautifully lit display panels and gentle wall pastels. The multi-level floor plan offers three airy showrooms, complemented by a stylish coffee bar and a state-of-the-art audio/visual system and movie screen.

“Rob, Noelle and I are delighted with the Gallery’s new look and anxious to make visitors aware of the new services and products we can offer our clients,” says Flagg.

These include stunning photographic images taken by Flagg, whose wide range of work has been published in Men’s Journal, Outside, National Geographic, Vogue and Powder. New to the Gallery are the jewelry designs of Judy Klimek of “Left Turn Jewelry” in Laguna Beach, as well as the ultra-modern and dynamic line of “Environment Furniture” made by Ruby Living Furniture of San Francisco.

“We are very excited to introduce both Left Turn Jewelry and Ruby Living Furniture to Tahoe. Left Turn's designs include one-of-a-kind necklaces and earrings, with bold imagination and extraordinary beauty,” adds Rob. “Ruby presents hand-select furnishings and accessories to reflect an eclectic blend of modern style with classic, warm design.”

Partners Gussenhoven and Nixon will manage the gallery’s day- to-day operations and help direct the gallery’s new focus and artistic goals. Raised in Holland, Gussenhoven began his career in retail and helped create the largest chain of outdoor stores in Holland. He is a veteran marketing consultant for Fortune 100 companies such as GE and Cooper Industries. Interior designer Noelle Nixon has worked in the Tahoe area for many years. Past projects include Truckee’s Moody’s Bistro and Dragonfly restaurant, as well as the spa at the Resort at Squaw Creek.
