The Village at Squaw Unveils New Development Plan That Insures a Sustainable Future for the Resort While Preserving its Unique Legacy

Community input leads to dramatic improvements in Village development plan

300 community meetings and more than 5,000 people helped create a revamped Village plan

The New Plan is smaller and focused - Project size reduced by 1/3 - Size and scale of the buildings reduced as well

Surface parking for day skiers maintained

Original Olympic House and Member's Locker Room will be preserved
[Olympic Valley, Calif.] December 16, 2013 - The leadership of The Village at Squaw Valley unveiled dramatic new plans for their proposed development today, the culmination of an unprecedented multi-year community input process in which more than 300 meetings were held and more than 5,000 individuals were solicited for their opinions.

Link to artistic renderings of the revised Village development plan
The outcome of this robust community input process is apparent throughout the new plans. After listening to the array of stakeholders in the region, Squaw's planning professionals' new approach was motivated by three key concepts: respect the mountain, preserve Squaw Valley's legacy and welcome a new generation of skiers to the mountain.

This comprehensive review led to the development of a new, more focused plan including some of the following changes:

Eliminated an additional 700 bedrooms totaling one third of the lodging, in total the plan has been reduced 60 per cent from its original plan of 3,800 bedrooms
Preserved the day skier experience and key Olympic buildings
Limited building height in key areas to protect existing view corridors
Created focused family and training area
Significantly reduced and reconfigured Mountain Adventure Camp, formerly called Grand Camp
Strengthened operations by relocating Squaw Kids, enhancing skier support facilities and improving the Snow Beach area
Committed to investing millions in restoring Squaw Creek and ongoing environmental initiatives

Key Traffic Measures:

Goal to reduce peak hour traffic by 25%
Build the right amount of lodging to extend the length of stay and reduce daily trips
Encourage transit use by creating a transit center that will increase bus and shuttle service to and from Squaw
Build more employee housing in the Valley and connect with shuttle service
Relocate and expand parking and shipping/receiving close to Highway 89 to reduce peak hour traffic on Squaw Valley Road

"These new plans reflect the input of literally thousands of our friends and neighbors in the Tahoe region," said Andy Wirth, President and CEO. "We listened and we're ready to move forward with a scaled down development that will protect Squaw's future and create more than 2,300 jobs in the area, while protecting more than 6,000 acres of recreational land."

"The design concept presented today represents a significant, big step towards accommodation with the Squaw Valley community," said David Stepner, a community leader. "The thinking behind this proposal seems to recognize some key community values: preserving the Squaw Heritage with "O" House; being a non-obtrusive neighbor to surrounding HOA's with key view lines being maintained; supporting Squaw's special camaraderie with preserving the Member's Locker Room; recognizing the daily skier population and limiting the impact on Squaw's resources with a significant reduction in room count," he added. "A lot depends on the forthcoming specific plan and draft EIR, let's continue this spirit."

"We've always created world class athletes on the slopes of Squaw," said Olympic champion Jonny Moseley. "From my own personal experience, I know that many people feared that Squaw was going to build an amusement park that didn't fit in with our mountain. The plans for a Mountain Adventure Center will bring family fun and serious athletic training to Squaw, ensuring the next generations of Olympians are cultivated here. This really gets it right."

"I'm psyched on the new plan- it represents the right balance for the day skier vibe with the O house and Member's locker room surviving," said noted athlete JT Holmes. "And it will enhance the village, making it a cool and fun place with a lot to do 12 months a year. This will fill enough bedrooms to get Squaw the funds to keep upgrading and expanding the lift system."

In addition, Vice President of Development Chevis Hosea announced the re-opening of the Base Camp Information Center. Located on First Street in the Village at Squaw Valley, the new center will have a large amount of information about the new plans unveiled today, along with representatives from Squaw to answer questions from the public. The center will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

More informationabout the Village development plan, including an interactive map, can be found at www.thevillageatsquaw.com.

New Snow at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows - Photos Below

With snow already falling in Tahoe, skiers and riders can get the most out of winter with a Tahoe Super Pass. Season pass prices will increase after October 13.

[Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadow, Calif.] October 9, 2013 – Last night, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have received a dusting of snow for the third time this fall. For those who want to make the most of this winter season, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows’ season pass, the Tahoe Super Pass, is currently on sale at $499 for a Bronze pass, $559 for a Silver pass, and $789 for an unlimited Gold pass. Prices will increase after October 13.

[Click here for photos of the this morning’s snow at Squaw Valley]

The Tahoe Super Pass offers access to 6,000 acres of unrivaled terrain, including Squaw’s scenic mountaintop beginner area and coveted steeps, as well as Alpine’s vast intermediate terrain and open boundaries.

Along with access to neighboring Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, Silver and Gold passholders also get season-long access to Sierra-at-Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe. And on top of that, Gold passholders also receive two free lift tickets to Whistler Blackcomb as well as 50% off lift tickets all season at Alta Snowbird, Aspen | Snowmass, Jackson Hole, Mammoth and Whister Blackcomb. A full list of passholder benefits is available at www.tahoesuperpass.com.

Season passes are the best way to save money this winter. With the advance purchase of a season pass, skiers and riders get both the best value, as well as the extra motivation to get outside and make the most out of the winter season. Season passholders typically ski and ride more days than anyone else on the mountain, which can have added health benefits as well as added value.

According to LIVESTRONG.com, skiing “not only burns lots of calories, but also improves strength, flexibility, balance, endurance and agility.”

Web MD notes, “Snowboarding uses the calf muscles, hamstrings, and quadriceps to guide the board; ankle and feet muscles for steering; and abdominal muscles for balance. It also burns about 480 calories per hour for someone weighing 150 pounds.”

Web MD continues, “Jonathan Chang, MD, of Pacific Orthopaedic Medical Group in Alhambra, Calif., says another key perk of snowboarding…is that ‘the thrill of shredding the powder is good for your mental health.’ Recent studies, Chang says, indicate people's mood and anxiety level improve when they are exercising outdoors.”

For more information or to purchase a Tahoe Super Pass, skiers and riders can head to www.tahoesuperpass.com. Squaw Valley is scheduled to open on November 27, and Alpine Meadows is scheduled to open on December 13, both weather and conditions permitting.

For those that maybe haven’t been to the resorts recently, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are currently in the middle of a five-year, $70 million Renaissance that has already brought new chairlifts, new dining experiences and the world’s first ski-in/ski-out Starbucks. This winter brings $8 million in improvements including a new yoga studio, two new food trucks, electric car charging stations, and $1.2 million in lodging renovations at The Village at Squaw Valley. For a full list of what’s new this winter, see www.squaw.com/media.

What’s New for 2013-14 at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows

Year three of the resorts’ $70 million renaissance brings a new yoga studio, $1.2 million in lodging improvements, electric car chargers, food trucks and a mid-mountain beer garden

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] October 3, 2013 – Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are investing nearly $8 million in capital improvements for the 2013-14 winter season. The improvements are part of year three of the resorts’ five-year, $70 million renaissance designed to improve all facets of the resort experience.

The investment for the first two years of the renaissance totaled $38 million and brought new chairlifts, expanded kids’ activities, new restaurants, redesigned terrain parks, and the world’s first ski-in/ski-out Starbucks to the resorts. The improvements continue this winter with a new yoga studio, $1.2 million in lodging improvements, electric car chargers, food trucks and a mid-mountain beer garden.

New Wanderlust Yoga Studio
Squaw and Wanderlust have partnered to open the new Wanderlust Yoga Studio – a permanent home for yoga and positive energy in beautiful Squaw Valley. In addition to classes seven days a week, the new yoga studio will offer workshops that incorporate Squaw’s extraordinary landscape, including pairing yoga classes with hiking and paddleboarding in the summer and skiing and riding in the winter. Squaw Valley was the original birthplace of the Wanderlust Festival, now the world’s largest and fastest growing music and yoga festival. Click here for photos of the Wanderlust Yoga Studio.

$1.2 Million in lodging renovations at The Village at Squaw Valley
The slope side condominium suites at The Village at Squaw Valley have received $1.2 million in renovations in summer 2013. Each bedroom in every rental unit at The Village at Squaw Valley has been upgraded with new mattresses and triple-sheet bedding with a sophisticated feel – all to ensure a great night’s sleep in the mountains. Many units have also received new furniture, carpet, additional flat screen TVs and air conditioning. The Village offers spacious condominium suites in one, two and three bedroom options complete with a full kitchen, fireplace, balcony and a bathroom per every bedroom in the unit – perfect for families. Click here for photos of the renovated rooms at The Village at Squaw Valley. [See photo file names for photo credit]

New Mtn Roots Food Trucks
Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have purchased two new fully-outfitted food trucks to serve fresh, new dining options at the resorts this winter. The food trucks, named Mtn Roots, will offer an eclectic mix of regionally and sustainably sourced food. The Mtn Roots trucks will serve up quick bites as well as more substantial options for sit-down meals that can be enjoyed on nearby outdoor tables. The food trucks will feature rotating menus based on the ingredients available locally as well as feedback from diners.

Many of the sustainable menu offerings will be created in partnership with the Tahoe Food Hub, a local non-profit organization committed to increasing the availability of nutritious, ecologically grown food by connecting small-scale, regional food producers with schools, restaurants and resorts like Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. More information on the Tahoe Food Hub can be found at www.tahoefoodhub.org. In partnership with K2 Skis, the food trucks will also offer a signature K2 dish. One of the food trucks will be parked primarily on First Street at The Village at Squaw Valley and the other at the base of Alpine Meadows – though both trucks will roam for special events. Click here for photos the new food trucks. [Credit: Matt Palmer]

New Mid-Mountain Beer Garden at Alpine Meadows
Alpine Meadows’ mid-mountain lodge, The Chalet, is being transformed into a Bavarian-style beer garden for this winter season. The Chalet and the new Sierra Beer Garden will offer an array of leading Californian beers as well as tasty pressed sandwiches and sausage plates. One signature menu item will be raclette – a melted cheese Swiss specialty that is sure to delight diners. The fully-renovated Chalet will be open for Christmas 2013.

New Electric Car Charging Stations
New for the 2013-14 winter season, Squaw Valley has installed four new electric car chargers at the resort, making Squaw the first ski resort in California to install charging stations for electric cars. The resort installed two new CS-40 pedestal chargers from Clipper Creek, offering four 30 amp, 240 volt, J1772 charging stations. J1772 charging stations are a SAE standard for electrical connectors for electric vehicles, meaning the chargers will be compatible with most electric cars on the market today.

The new charging stations are located at the western edge of the Far East Building at Squaw Valley, next to the Cornice Cantina. Guests can spend the time needed to charge their vehicles enjoying all that Squaw Valley has to offer including world-class skiing and snowboarding, and four seasons of scenic tram rides, family activities, and shopping and dining in The Village. The charging stations will be open to guests seven days a week – however, guests are asked not to leave their cars at the charging stations for more than 10 hours at a time. New Menu Items at the KT Base Bar and Plaza Bar
The recently renovated KT Base Bar and Plaza Bar are both getting delicious new menu items for the 2013-14 winter season. New dishes include the Tahoe Food Hub Kale and Quinoa Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette (see above), Tuna Tartar, Greek-Inspired Flatbread Pizza, AntiPasti with cured meats, olives, pepperoncini, artichoke hearts and cheeses, gluten-free Burrito Bowls and rotating soup of the weeks. Located in and outside of Olympic House at Squaw Valley, Plaza Bar and The KT Sundeck make for two of the best places to enjoy lunch and après ski at the mountain. New Teaching Tykes program
This winter, Squaw Valley is offering a new program called Teaching Tykes, designed for parents who want tips on how to teach their little one (ages 3-5) to ski or snowboard. Available for $169, the price includes a one hour lesson for parent and child, beginner lift ticket for parent and child if 5 years old (ages 3 & 4 are already free) and kids ski or snowboard rentals. Click here for photos of tykes at Squaw Valley. [Credit: Jeff Curtes]

New season-long kids programs at both resorts
Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are each offering a new kids team program for the 2013-14 winter season. The snowboarding equivalent of Squaw’s long acclaimed Mighty Mites program, the new Mighty Riders program will offer young riders ages 7-13 the opportunity to develop skills and passion for snowboarding over the course of the winter season at Squaw Valley. At Alpine Meadows, the new Snow Rangers program will offer winter adventures and on-mountain training such as backcountry touring, snow science, avalanche awareness, snow camping and more for past ski team members ages 12-18 who have a solid base of alpine skiing.

Continued on-mountain investments in snowmaking, grooming and terrain parks
To ensure excellent snow surface conditions regardless of Mother Nature’s plans, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are continuing to invest in the resorts’ snowmaking system and grooming fleet for the 2013-14 winter season. Between Squaw and Alpine, the resorts are investing over $2 million in state-of-the-art snowmaking guns, new piping and system upgrades. To ensure extraordinary snow surface conditions throughout the season, Squaw and Alpine are also investing $1.4 million in five new snow cats, including a winch cat, giving the resorts the best grooming technology available to create smooth, groomed slopes across the mountain.

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are also investing $70,000 in new terrain park features. The focus will be on expanding the resorts’ collection of jibs along with several signature features, allowing for more variety and more creativity in the terrain park layouts for next winter. Vail Resorts Announces The Epic Race, Offering an Epic Pass for Life to Guests Who Can Ski the World: 26 Resorts in Four Countries in One Season

The Epic Race challenges passholders to ski and ride 26 iconic mountains in four countries, including the U.S. (Colorado, Utah, Lake Tahoe, Minnesota and Michigan), Switzerland, France and Austria
Up to 10 winners will receive an Epic Pass for life
Registration for The Epic Race opens Nov. 1 at www.snow.com/epic-pass/info/epic-race.aspx

BROOMFIELD, Colo. – Oct. 2, 2013 – This season Vail Resorts announced that the Epic Pass now includes 26 mountains in four countries. And now Vail Resorts is calling all globetrotting, Epic Pass-holding, die-hard skiers and snowboarders for The Epic Race – a season-long competition to visit all 26 resorts spread across four countries that make up the Epic Pass. The first 10 people to complete the race will receive an Epic Pass for life.

“When we launched the Epic Pass with five resorts in 2008, I said our guests wouldn’t be able to out-ski or ride this pass,” said Rob Katz chairman and chief executive officer of Vail Resorts. “Five years later, after adding three more countries and 21 additional resorts, we’re throwing down the gauntlet. If you can be one of the first to ski the world, you’ll ski for life.”

Starting Nov. 1, guests can register to Ski the World by visiting www.snow.com/epic-pass/info/epic-race.aspx. Each racer will need to ski or ride all 26 resorts on the Epic Pass (Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin and Eldora in Colorado; Canyons in Park City, Utah; Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood at Lake Tahoe; Afton Alps, Minnesota; Mt. Brighton, Michigan; Verbier, Switzerland; Arlberg, Austria – St. Anton, Lech, Zürs, St. Christoph and Stuben; and Les 3 Vallées, France – Courchevel, La Tania, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, Les Menuires, Saint Martin de Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle). Epic Racers will be asked to document and share their experience at each resort they visit to be eligible to win. All the content from the Epic Racers will be available at www.snow.com/epic-pass/info/epic-race.aspx.

“If there was any doubt that the Epic Pass is by far and away the snowsports industry’s best and most comprehensive pass, the experiences these contestants share should put the question to rest,” said Katz. “What other pass allows you to enjoy the steep and deep of the Sierra Nevada, the amazing powder of the Wasatch, the majesty of the Rockies, the urban hills in Michigan and Minnesota, the interconnectivity of the French Alps and the world’s largest linked ski area, the unmatched off-piste skiing and riding of the Swiss Alps, and the birthplace of modern Alpine skiing technique in the Tyrolean Alps?”

Epic Racers will be responsible for their own expenses in undertaking the Epic Race and no racer will be permitted to ski or ride more than one resort per day in the U.S. and two resorts per day in Europe to ensure they capture and enjoy the full experience of each mountain. Race winners receiving an Epic Pass for life will be able to ski or ride only the resorts operated by Vail Resorts in any given year. All rules and guidelines will be posted on www.snow.com/epic-pass/info/epic-race.aspx on Nov. 1 and included in the registration materials provided to guests.

The Epic Pass features unlimited, unrestricted skiing and riding at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin and Eldora in Colorado; Canyons in Park City, Utah; Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood at Lake Tahoe; Afton Alps in Minnesota and Mt. Brighton in Michigan. Furthermore, Epic Pass holders have the opportunity to extend their skiing and riding adventures from the U.S. to Europe with five free days at the renowned mountain resorts of Verbier, Switzerland, five free days at Arlberg, Austria and five free days at Les 3 Vallées, France. Vail Resorts is offering the industry’s best-selling season pass at $709 for adults and $369 for children (ages 5-12), but these prices are only guaranteed through Oct. 13, 2013. For more information about the 2013-2014 season pass line-up or to purchase a pass online, visit www.epicpass.com.

“The Epic Pass is more attractive than ever, not just because of the access it provides to 26 mountains in four countries, but also because of the unprecedented on-mountain improvements of $130-140 million across our resorts for the upcoming season,” said Kirsten Lynch, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Vail Resorts. “Not since the opening of Blue Sky Basin at Vail have we seen such a significant terrain expansion at a Colorado ski resort as with the addition of Peak 6 at Breckenridge. We’re also adding a new high-speed six-person lift in Mid-Vail to get guests into the Back Bowls faster and opening a new on-mountain restaurant at the base of Beaver Creek’s famed Birds of Prey race course. And then there’s the fourth generation of EpicMix – Epic Academy – which offers a unique way to earn and share your accomplishments in our world-class ski and ride schools.”

Oktoberfest Returns to The Village at Squaw Valley September 28

The Village at Squaw Valley celebrates the best of Munich with Authentic Beer, Bratwurst, Polka and Music

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] September 13, 2013 –North Lake Tahoe’s largest Oktoberfest celebration is returning to The Village at Squaw Valley this September, complete with Bavarian Music, authentic German beer and food, the ever-popular Oktoberfest Games, and plenty of family fun. Squaw’s annual Oktoberfest will transform The Village at Squaw Valley into a miniature Bavaria on Saturday, September 28 from 2-6 p.m.

Click here for Oktoberfest photos for media use

Squaw Valley’s event is modeled after the original Oktoberfest, a 16-day annual festival held in Munich, Germany. Guests can enjoy traditional German entertainment including performances by Joe Smiell and his 20-piece Bavarian band on the main stage. Additional music and dancing will take place on the First Street stage with the Almenrauch Schuhplattler Bavarian Folk Dancers and the Alpentanzer Schuhplattler Austrian Dance Troop accompanied by the Alpentanz Kapelle band.

Beer lovers can toast each other in the Village-wide Biergarten, where they will find a wide selection of authentic German brews including the annual favorite, Spaten. The first beer, sold in a commemorative festival glass, is $10. Additional beers will be available for $5, with all proceeds from beer sales benefiting the Tahoe Truckee Lacrosse Foundation.

In addition to the live music and beer tasting, event attendees can compete for prizes in the Oktoberfest Games. Intensity is high as festival-goers compete in the stein holding competition, keg-rolling race and the bratwurst toss. The games are just as much fun to watch as they are to play, and guests are encouraged to further get into the spirit of the event by wearing traditional lederhosen and dirndls.

In celebration of Oktoberfest, village restaurants will serve traditional German bratwurst with sauerkraut and a variety of other delicious foods served outside in the open air beer hall in the Tram Promenade. Oktoberfest also features a root beer float station for the kids – the perfect way to start or finish off the day.

Entrance to The Village at Squaw Valley’s Oktoberfest celebration and entertainment are free. Festival goers must be 21 years or older with a valid ID to purchase beer. No outside alcohol will be permitted.

Held in late September, the event takes place during one of the most spectacular months in the Sierra, when the aspen trees are ablaze in gold, red and orange and the days are pleasantly crisp and sunny.
