[Squaw Valley USA] April 20, 2010 – This weekend, ski patrollers went head to head at Squaw Valley USA during the first ever nation-wide Professional Ski Patrol Olympics. Patrol teams from regions across the United States and Canada competed in insane sled races, bamboo throws, avalanche transceiver searches and a giant slalom race down some of Squaw Valley’s steepest terrain. [Squaw Valley USA] April 7, 2010 – After receiving seven feet of fresh snow in seven days, Squaw Valley USA is once again offering the longest and most complete ski season in Lake Tahoe with plans to stay open for skiing and riding through May 9, 2010. Squaw Valley’s annual snowfall of 450 inches and mountain topography featuring acres upon acres of upper elevation North-facing terrain are among the natural attributes that enable the resort to remain open through the middle of May each ski season. This year, Squaw Valley’s closing date coincides with the resort’s May 9, 2010 deadline to purchase 2010-11 Season Passes at the discounted rate. 2010-11 Season Passes are on sale now starting at $369 for an adult pass with the option of adding a pass for this spring for $129. Spring Season Passes are also available separately for $179.

• To date, Squaw Valley USA has received over 475 inches or over 39 1/2 feet of snow this season, already exceeding the resort’s annual average of 450 inches.
• Base depths currently measure 170-180 inches on the upper elevations.
• A testament to Squaw Valley’s spring bounty, the National Weather Service is calling for snow showers this coming weekend, April 9 through April 13.
• Current video and images of spring condtions are available on www.squaw.com.

Squaw Valley’s blues skies, radiant sunshine, and deep snowpack epitomize perfect spring skiing conditions. Along with fresh powder, springtime brings coveted ‘corn’ snow, when the snow freezes at night and then softens gradually throughout the day as it is warmed by the sun. Akin to fresh powder, the corn snow surface is soft and forgiving and makes turning easy and very fun.

Squaw Valley’s legendary spring product and the opportunity to package a 2010 Spring Pass with a 2010-11 Season Pass are two great reasons to come ski and ride Squaw this spring!

21st ANNUAL BILLY DUTTON UPHILL RACE SET FOR APRIL 11, 2010
[Squaw Valley USA] April 2, 2010 – Each spring hundreds of Nordic skiers, snowshoers and fit bodies race up the mountain in the Annual Billy Dutton Uphill, in honor of late local luminary, Billy Dutton. The original “run what ya brung” race is an uphill answer to the famous ‘Chinese Downhill’ of the 70s. Starting from the bottom of KT-22, the course climbs 2,000 vertical feet over 3.2 miles to the finish at High Camp, el. 8200’.

The Billy Dutton Uphill race is open to Nordic skiers, snowshoers, runners and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Registration for the April 11th race begins at 7am at Dave’s Deli and the race starts at 8am at the Funitel. The $20 entry fee includes a tee shirt and goodie bag and all proceeds benefit Far West Nordic’s juniors program.

The always smiling Billy Dutton helped establish the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue (TNSR) in 1976, based on his passion for cross country skiing and his vast knowledge of the Tahoe Basin and the surrounding backcountry. “Billy was our strongest skier. I was always sure to be with the likes of him when we teamed up on searches,” says Doug Read, Dutton’s friend and fellow original member of TNSR.

Read recounts the time when Dutton herringboned eight miles up and out of a canyon near Diamond Crossing, carrying a hurt woman on his back to safety and recovery. “All he asked was if I would carry his poles,” recalls Read. “He was the type who made our community such a wonderful place to live.”

RACE TIME
• The race begins at 8 am at the Funitel
• Awards and party at High Camp with silent auction, raffle prizes, music and food.

RACE DISTANCE
• 3.2 miles uphill
• 2,000 vertical feet
• The race starts at the base of KT-22, goes UP the Mountain Run, over to the top of Shirley Lake, and ends after a brief downhill at High Camp.

REGISTRATION AND FEES

• $20 includes T shirt and goodies

RACE DIVISIONS
