Kites Color the Sky at Squaw Valley's Soaring Kites & Music Festival July 9, 2011

[Squaw Valley USA] June 27 - Every July, Squaw Valley USA celebrates the art and sport of kite flying as host to the nation’s highest altitude organized kiting festival at High Camp, el. 8200’. Gigantic flying creatures, professional kite flyers, kite-making and face painting for the kids, and the live music are all part of the high-flying enjoyment of the 10th Annual Soaring Kites & Music Festival on Saturday, July 9, 2011.

The festival brings members of regional and national kite organizations to Squaw Valley’s mountaintop to launch dozens of elaborate and colorful kites. The Soaring Kites & Music Festival also includes live music, kite-making workshop for kids and professional kite flying demonstrations. Kite flying, which originated in 5th Century BC China, is now both a popular pastime and a competitive sport. The annual Soaring Kites & Music Festival is a celebration of the pleasure and fellowship that kite flying continues to conjure today.

The Soaring Kites & Music Festival is from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the kite-making workshop will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Guests are invited to bring their own kites or they can purchase kites at the festival. Kids of all ages can get their faces painted with whimsical designs from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

High Camp’s Swimming Pool & Hot Tub, Poolside CafĂ©, roller skating, hiking, paintball, disc golf and the lively Umbrella Bar provide endless fun throughout the festival. The Cable Car runs every 20 minutes from 10:40 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and the High Camp Swimming Pool & Hot Tub will be open from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
