Squaw Valley Offers Discounted Skiing & Riding for Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California

Squaw Valley offers $39 lift tickets on Monday, May 16 with a major portion of proceeds benefitting Biking for a Better World

[Squaw Valley USA] May 12, 2011 –In honor of hosting the start of Stage 2 of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, Squaw Valley USA will be open for skiing and riding on May 16 with lift tickets priced at just $39. Squaw Valley is donating a major portion of the day’s proceeds to Biking for a Better World, a local non-profit that improves the quality of life in communities around the world by providing them with bicycles and empowerment.

“We are thrilled to host the start of Stage 2,” said Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We hope everyone will come watch the start and enjoy the incredible spring skiing conditions that Squaw is known for and help us support a great cause.”

The Amgen Tour of California is the largest cycling event in America, covering 800 miles in eight days. This is the first year the race will start in Lake Tahoe, one of the country’s most spectacular destinations and nationally renowned cycling meccas. As host to the start of Stage 2, The Village at Squaw Valley will come alive with live music, parties and events to accompany the prestigious race.

Thursday, May 12, the Squaw Valley Institute hosts “Soulcycler, Around the World Bike Tour” with local photographer and cycling enthusiast, Rick Gunn. The presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Olympic Village Lodge (OVL).

Saturday, May 14, The Village at Squaw Valley will host the Tahoe Bike Swap to benefit Biking for a Better World. The bike swap runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes all biking related items. $3 entry fees and 20% of all sales benefit Biking for a Better World who uses the power of pedaling to bring bicycles to people who need them. Saturday evening, cycling enthusiasts can enjoy a free outdoor screening of Breaking Away (1979). The movie starts in the Village at Squaw Valley at dusk, with Mamasake as the alternate location in case of weather.

Sunday, May 15, spectators can watch the final two hours of the Stage 1 finish live on a jumbotron in The Village at Squaw Valley followed by a lively village-wide happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Monday, May 16, cycling enthusiasts can start the morning with a breakfast buffet at PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. As the festivities begin, spectators can watch riders sign in under the Olympic Rings at 9:15 a.m., followed by the 10:15 a.m. start of Stage 2. The Village will continue the celebration with live music starting at 10:30 a.m. and continuing into the afternoon. Spectators can watch the last two hours of the Stage 2 finish in Sacramento live on the jumbotron screen in The Village at Squaw Valley from approximately 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

With Squaw Valley’s extended ski season through May 30, spectators can spend the day on the slopes following the start of the race. In honor of the Amgen Tour of California, Squaw Valley is selling discounted lift tickets for just $39 with a major portion of proceeds going to Biking for a Better World.

The 2011 Amgen Tour of California will visit 15 Host Cities for official stage starts and finishes, while other cities along the route also will have the opportunity to witness the excitement of elite professional cycling. Stages for the 2011 Amgen Tour of California include:

• Stage 2: Monday, May 16 – North Lake Tahoe-Squaw Valley USA to Sacramento
• Stage 3: Tuesday, May 17 – Auburn to Modesto
• Stage 4: Wednesday, May 18 – Livermore to San Jose
• Stage 5: Thursday, May 19 – Seaside to Paso Robles
• Stage 6: Friday, May 20 – Solvang Individual Time Trial
• Stage 7: Saturday, May 21 – Claremont to Mt. Baldy
• Stage 8: Sunday, May 22 – Santa Clarita to Thousand Oaks
