Squaw Valley Named Top Ski Resort by Outside Magazine

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] November 17, 2012 – Squaw Valley has been selected as the No.1 Ski Resort in Outside Magazine’s rankings for Top 40 Best Ski Resorts in North America. Outside Magazine posted their rankings online on Monday, November 5. The full article is available at OutsideOnline.com, click here for a link to the article.

Outside Magazine sites 300 bluebird days, 450 inches of annual snowfall, terrain variety and an abundance of activities for kids and families as reasons for Squaw Valley’s top ranking. The article also touted Squaw’s focus on safety and variety of après ski options; as well as commended Squaw Valley’s ski rental shop for offering “the smoothest rental process in the states.”

"We are truly honored to have been named No. 1 Ski Resort in North America by Outside Magazine. With their stunning images and the quality and variety of their writing, Outside Magazine has always been a favorite of mine. And I'm not the only one, such that it has become possibly the single most significant and influential publication within the ski industry," said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.
Squaw Valley's placement as the No. 1 Resort in North America comes in the midst of the resort's five year capital improvement plan, deemed the Renaissance. Over the course of five years, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are investing $70 million into every facet of the resort experience. Now in year two of the Renaissance, the resorts have invested nearly $40 million, with notable improvements including all new terrain parks, several new restaurants, a new ticket center and the world's first ski-in/ski-out Starbucks - just to name a few.
"One of our primary goals for the Renaissance is to make our mountains more friendly and approachable for all of our guests,” continued Wirth. “This No. 1 ranking is affirmation of our work over the past two years. We will celebrate our achievement for a bit, then press on as there is still much work to be done for the near and the long term - as in many ways, we’re just getting started."

Outside Magazine notes that their team “spent months scoring and ranking dozens of resorts from California to Maine, British Columbia to Quebec,” to come up with their final Top 40 list.
