Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows’ January Events Schedule

January rings in the new year with lots of live music, $39 learn to ski and snowboard days and the opening of the Ice Bar

[Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, Calif.] January 2, 2013 – The holidays have come and gone, but the action has not slowed down at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. The resorts ring in the new year with a packed calendar of January events. In honor of National Learn Ski and Snowboard Month, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are hosting four $39 Learn to Ski and Snowboard Days for first-time skiers and snowboarders. January also brings National Safety Awareness week, and Squaw and Alpine have a series of events planned to celebrate. For those seeking entertainment, Squaw Valley is hosting the Last Chair Music Festival with DJ sets by Foster the People and Passion Pit and Alpine Meadows welcomes the first Ice Bar party of the season.

January 4-5 and January 11-12: Last Chair Music Festival at Squaw Valley
The first two weekends of January will bring live music on Friday and Saturday nights to the Squaw Valley Conference Center including live DJ sets by Passion Pit, Foster the People and Bonobo, and a live concert by LETTUCE. Hit supporting acts will also be sharing the stage with the headliners for four nights of dance-inspiring music. Tickets for each day of the festival will be available packaged with a daily lift ticket for $99 or sold separately for $35.

January 5-6: Dawn Patrol at Squaw Valley
Enjoy a unique early morning mountain experience with exclusive access to untouched corduroy or fresh powder depending on the weather. Dawn Patrollers arrive before the general public and take the Tram to High Camp before anyone else. Dawn Patrol meets at the Tram Building at 7:30 a.m. to take the 7:40 a.m. Tram. $29 for adults, $19 youth and $12 for kids 12 and under.

January 5: Alpenglow Demo Day at Alpine Meadows
Renowned outdoor adventure go-to shop, Alpenglow sports, will again partner with Alpine Meadows to host one of the region’s most highly anticipated on-snow demo days. Those looking to test-drive the latest gear free of charge can choose from brands like Black Diamond, Dynafit, Dynastar, Marker/Volkl, DPS, Scarpa, G3, Garmont/Scott, Moment, Venture Snowboards, Ski Logic, Salomon and Suunto.The experts from Alpenglow Sports will be available to offer tips and information on selecting the best equipment for each individual.

January 6: Sunday Mountaintop Service at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows
Give thanks and praise in the great outdoors every Sunday, led by Tahoe Resort Ministries.  Services at Squaw Valley are held at 2 p.m. at the top of Big Blue Express. For those not skiing or riding, a Tram ticket is required. Services at Alpine Meadows are at the top of Roundhouse Chair at 2 p.m. A day lift ticket or season pass is required. All are welcome.

January 15: Free Avalanche Beacon Workshops at Squaw Valley
Squaw Valley Ski Patrol offers a free avalanche awareness and companion rescue workshop, twice a month to anyone who is interested in either polishing up their skills, or learning for the first time. 5:30-7 p.m. at the Ski Patrol Locker Room (between Squaw Kids and the Far East chairlift). January 17: Alpenglow Winter Film Series at Squaw Valley with Adrian Ballinger
Hear from world-renowned athletes as they share stories of their incredible adventures in the mountains. Many of these shows are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and hear from these incredible athletes. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the Squaw Valley Conference Center and showings are free.

January 19-27: National Safety Awareness Week
Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley join the National Ski Area Association in promoting mountain safety awareness. A variety of events will help our guests remember to wear a helmet, slather on that sunscreen, and learn about avalanche awareness.

January 19: Ice Bar Kickoff Party at Alpine Meadows
This season’s first Ice Bar party means winter is officially in full force. Recognized as one of Tahoe’s most unique spots to gather with friends and catch a few rays of the Sierra’s famous winter sunshine, the Ice Bar is a party every day during the ski season. The grand opening is Alpine’s way of celebrating the Ice Bar, it’s inevitable snowball battles, live on-snow music, and casual inviting ambiance usually reserved for the beach. Skiers and riders who migrate to the Ice Bar (located at the base of the Sherwood Chair) can kick back in a lounge chair with a cold beverage and barbecued bratwurst, try their luck with the hula-hoop contest, or dance to some great DJ beats.

January 19: Meet the Squaw Dogs at Gallery Keoki
Get on all fours and rub noses with your favorite Squaw Dog this January. Support our local heroes and meet the Squaw Dogs on Saturday, January 19 from 6-8 p.m. at  Gallery Keoki. Event is free to the public. Raffle prizes and autographed Patrol Dog images will be on sale with proceeds benefitting the Squaw Dogs.

January 25-26: Guided Moonlight Snowshoe Tours at Squaw Valley
Come out and explore Squaw Valley during the spectacular winter full moon. Join our experienced guides as you snowshoe to spectacular moonlit views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountain peaks. Fun for all ages, cost includes snowshoe rentals (you must supply your own poles if needed). January 26: Free Burton Demo Day at Alpine Meadows
Test out the latest boards from Burton for free!  Demos will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the snow near the Sun Deck. Guests must have a day ticket or season pass, valid license and credit card to demo. Riders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.
