U.S Ski Team Athletes | Squaw's Renaissance

What an incredible day today! As you may know, Squaw Valley is hosting an important fundraiser for the U.S. Ski Team Foundation, and in conjunction with that event, I was fortunate to join a group of legendary US skiers past and present, including Julia Mancuso, Nick Daniels, Travis Ganong, Tamara McKinney, Shannon Bahrke and Marco Sullivan – just to name a few.

The grooming on Shirley and Granite was perfect, and it was one of those perfect spring days of skiing and riding here at Squaw. The great snow, coupled with skiing with these legendary athletes, made a very memorable start to my day.

Before we make the announcement later today, I wanted you to be among the first to know that Squaw has been selected by the U.S. Ski Team to host the U.S. Alpine National Ski Championships for 2013 and 2014. We are thrilled and honored to welcome this prestigious event back to Squaw Valley, and we hope that our world class athletes will enjoy competing in next year's Nationals on their home turf!

One of Squaw's most decorated athletes is Tamara McKinney – a true innovator of women's skiing and the first American woman to ever win the overall World Cup title. Given Tamara's tremendous success and legacy, it's only appropriate that our mountain feature a run named after this legendary ski racer. As of today, the run formerly known as East Face off of KT-22 will be known as "Tamara's". We will be honoring Tamara with this announcement this afternoon during the U.S. Ski Team Day celebration here at the mountain. Please be sure to pass along your congratulations to Tamara for this honor when you see her on the slopes with her daughter, Francesca, and our Squaw Valley race team!

As we make our way towards the 2012-13 winter season, I'm excited to tell you about phase II of Squaw Valley's Renaissance – the five year, $50 million makeover of this legendary mountain resort. This upcoming summer we will dramatically expand every aspect of our snowmaking systems to provide a more reliable, high-quality snow surface all season long – particularly in the early season. While we are still finalizing the details of this plan, we are projecting an investment of well over $5 million to enhance this facet of the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows experience.

And perhaps the most exciting part of phase II of Squaw's Renaissance, is the High Camp chairlift realignment project, designed to create better flow and natural progression for beginner through intermediate skiers and riders. In order to achieve this goal, we will first remove the old Links chair, and replace it with a three-person chairlift in a new alignment to improve the beginner ski and snowboard experience.

Next, we will be replacing the old High Camp chairlift with a longer, new high-speed six-pack chairlift that will provide access to Shirley Lake, Solitude and Granite Chief. We will also be installing a new TeleCord to the top of the Belmont chairlift for easier access to the terrain parks. As promised, the Renaissance continues and we remain committed to providing the ultimate mountain experience here at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.

The recent snowfall has given us a strong finish to the season, and I trust that you will continue to enjoy the vast and unmatched terrain that remains open here at Squaw and Alpine. As other resorts begin to close for the season, we're excited to offer many more incredible spring skiing days to come!

See you on the mountain.
